UCLA vs. USC (out-of-state)

I know 3 kids at UCLA who can’t find a fourth class to take next semester because nothing is available!

UCLA is on the quarter system so can’t be next semester. I surprised nobody mentioned UCLA is on quarter system and USC on semester system.

Just another example where bad information is passed along here at DCUM.

Actually, Santa Monica is more easily accessible by the Expo Line from USC campus.
In addition, the USC Village is an amazing housing/shopping/dining area located on campus.

But go immediately off campus in any direction and it’s terrible.

There is no more an issue getting classes at UCLA then most other large schools. The school’s food ranking is #1 in the country. It’s the superior school on all fronts. Housing crisis is a drama filled term. The first years get housing and then for all other years you find an apartment with roommates.

USC is literally in one of the worst neighborhoods of Los Angeles and is full of spoiled rich kids who legacy status helped to buy their way in. Its ranking is far worse than UCLA.

I view them as exact equals, and before first gen/pell grant became the basis for ranking, USC was ranked ahead of UCLA.

I also mostly view them as equals, but UCLA has historically ranked above USC by a few slots. https://datasciencetexts.com/diversions/college_ranks_race.html

As much as the online discourse emphasizes UCLA's issues with classes and housing, UCLA scores extremely well in student satisfaction, retention, and food, and pretty well in housing. In other words, whatever warts it may have, students there are pretty happy.

USC is a fine school too.

Way more, huh? It's pretty easy to look up the actual demographic breakdowns of each school. Both are very diverse, with UCLA being marginally more diverse. And, of course, UCLA and Berkeley have been historically ethnically and economically diverse for many, many decades and long before it fashionable among top schools.

UCLA. I don’t want to get mugged, or worse, if I leave campus

Probably not, the fact that they mentioned a forth class is consistent with a quarter system schedule. My kid is on the quarter system and I say next semester all the time. Not UCLA, but yes, he's on two waitlist for the quarter starting next week. (The waitlists have always worked out in the past, but it is a little stressful).

UCLA grad here. I liked the quarter system. It can be punishing for procrastinators, but it also prevents classes from getting stale. YMMV.

The UC schools tend not to have many black students.

I’m very skeptical of test blind, so that would be a negative for any of the UC’s, not just ucla. I would make sure that my kid wasn’t interested in potentially switching to an impacted major.

But not more economic diversity.

Oh so idealistic. Most of us don’t live in suburbs of economic diversity.

Not idealistic just more knowledgable than you, obviously. The UC's mandate is to educate CA in state students from PUBLIC schools. And that is what it does.
