Interested to check out Chabad - but not sure I'd be welcomed?

OP here.

I'm not fixated on any one particular denomination - I understand Chabad is Hasidic but they are known for their outreach, so I thought maybe they could help us all on our journey.

I mentioned Reform because as I understand it, they consider patrilineal Jews as Jews, unlike Conservative and traditional Orthodox.

So if we are not welcomed by Chabad, we'd try Reform next, I think.

Chabad is a cult OP

Not the right place for you and your family
Reform would be a better fit

Yes Chabad is welcoming it’s all a facade.

Jew here am me how I know.

Ignore this bigoted troll. Chabad is an Orthodox Jewish sect. They are open about what they do, and provide some of the best Judaica resources available , for free.

Like any group of people, some members are crazy or bad. There are some large insular groups in some cities.

You don't have to live like them, but they aren't trying to trick, coerce, or rob anyone.

This, mostly. Chabad is all about helping Jewish people know how to participate in Jewish life and re-learn traditions their families lost. Chabad is all about trying to get Jews to do just a few more Jewish things than they would know to do on their own. I have tremendous respect for them and appreciate what they do.

For the record, I don't know anyone involved with Chabad who is "crazy or bad". Bigoted PP has watched too much Netflix and spends a whole bunch of time congratulating herself for being a Jew who knows not to be too Jewy so gentiles will like her (and is apparently uncomfortable with Jews who affiliate more openly).

You are kidding right?

I grew up in that community

Women in chabad are not treated the same as men

Yeah no the whole description of women’s role in society by Chabad is horrible.

You have no idea what you are talking about

While I respect another person’s choice to participate let’s be honest it’s a cult and why would anyone want a daughter raised in that community ?

No different than any other ultra orthodox religion yuck

Wow, this thread got revived.

OP here.

I do plan to convert Conservative and have my kids join alongside, too.

There is a Conservative synagogue about 30 minutes from me, where I may enroll our kids in their Hebrew School in the future.

Right now, my older is attending a school closer but they are the only young kid, so it's not as interactive as I'd like it to be.

I understand Chabad's mission. I don't think I was denigrating it and apologize if anyone believes I did.

The fact that you left the community under apparently acrimonious circumstances makes your testimony suspect, though. You have an axe to grind.

DP. What acrimonious circumstances? She didn't mention any.

Some people leave a house of worship/school/job because they looked around and realized it didn't fit their values.

This is an objectively dumb claim. Would you say the same about someone who left the Branch Davidian community?

Chabbad Lubavichers are a friendly strain of untra-Orthodox Jews, but that doesn’t change any of the core beliefs of the ultra-Orthodox Jewish community. Folks would be silly to think it did.

My biggest gripe with them is purely personal taste — they use Nusach Ari, which I find jarring when I go to their services or events because my background is Orthodox Nusach Ashkenaz. The person who is thinking of converting should be aware that their liturgy is a bit different than you’ll find in a conservative or non-Chabbad Orthodox synagogue.
