Both mess and hot mess can be said in an affectionate way or a cruel way -- depends on the situation and the tone of voice. You can say about your goofy, loveable friend, "That girl is a mess!" but the tone of voice will be a indulgent smile -- like, look at her, she's adorable with her all-over-the-place absent-minded professor self. (Mess will be pronounced more like, "me-yuss.") Or you can look out the side of your eye in disdain and say, "That girl is a MESS," (one syllable, said forcefully) as if, she's a slattern who is probably wearing the same undies she wore yesterday because she was stealing your best friend's man. It all depends on the context. |
Poop is a hot mess, and that is the actual origin of the term. |
You totally missed the point. |

No I don't think PP did. Why is there an assumption that hot mess always refers to a person? This term has been in use for decades. It can used to refer to a person, a thing or a situation. |
Hot mess is a term for some situation or a person that is either beyond repair, or requires intense cleanup...synonymous with the spillage of pancake syrup and grease onto a surface such as cardboard after it has dried. |

I thought it was like a steaming pile. I would never use the expression because of that. |

NP, but black people know what this phrase means, as our families have used it for generations. If you are confused as to its meaning, its a near certainty that you are not black. |
