UCLA impacted majors

Anonymous
Does anyone know how difficult it is to major in what you want at UCLA or other UC schools. My dc was looking at UCLA but is concerned about impacted majors and wondering if this makes this school a more frustrating experience. My dc is not sure of a major yet but has interests in English, Music, and Economics.

USC has an excellent music program. The out of state tuition for UCLA is alnost comparable to private USC. It's worth looking into.

not to mention a very important considering considering you have a son - USC is probably the most optimal school in the country when you rank academics and attractiveness of the female student body. The sorority girls there are mindblowing. KKG - jesus.

Yes, it's more frustrating. Larger classes, can't get classes so it takes longer to graduate, and/or take classes in the summer. I majored in one of the impacted majors years ago. I can only imagine it's worse now.

What is an impacted major?

I think it means that too many people want to major in it so they limit the number of people that can major in it. So it worries me that if you pay out of state rates for UCLA you might not even be able to major in what you want.

Even English is an impacted major at UCLA.

But wouldn't you know that before you decided to go there? I'm not being facetious, but wouldn't you have to be accepted into the college you wanted first?

Please stay out of California, particularly if you are going to complain about a State University system that your highly-taxed, hard-earned dollars did not support.

California is sending recruiter and flyers to our kids. They WANT these OOS dollars to keep afloat.

If you are in California, please stay off of DCUM. This is a DC-oriented board and you have no business here.

Just trying to gather information before I even let my dc go down that path of strongly considering this school. We like the school, the academics, the location. We have family and friends in the area. But I am concerned about so many restrictions and obstacles that the UC system might create. My DC is undecided on a major at this point but when I hear that majors like English and Economics are limited it makes me wonder how difficult this school makes things. Just wondering if anyone has a student that went to UCLA.

I live and work in Washington, but my entire family still lives in California -- including my eleven nieces and nephews. I am simply trying to keep the perpetually-angry, complaining, and resentful DCUM set out of California for the sake of all those nice people back there. And thank you, because you made my point about the "sweet" nature of Washingtonians much better than I ever could have.

They may certainly want your application dollars, but best of luck getting admitted to Berkeley or UCLA from out-of-state.

DC's school sent 3 to Berkeley last year...and a few to the other UC's. They want the actual tuition money from OOS
