I've been trying to buy organic milk, but everything that I can find at the regular Giant / Safeway type stores is ultra-high-temp pasteurized. I'm still on the fence about whether that's better or worse than non-organic milk that's normally pasteurized....
But, where's a decent place to get organic mild that is not UHT? I'm not crazy about the idea of adding a separate trip to MOM's / Whole Foods into my already busy weeks just for a gallon of milk, but can probably manage it some of the time. Unfortunately there's a Giant 1/2 mile from my house, and the nearest organic-type market is about 10 miles, so it's easy to get lazy and do all of my shopping at Giant! For those times that I can't get to a specialty store, which would you go for? UHT organic milk, or non-UHT non-organic milk? Thanks! |
Whole foods has both WF brand gallon milk, non-UHT, and Organic Valley gallon milk, non-UHT. I think they also have expensive half-gallons of Organic Valley non-UHT milk. And Natural by Nature and several other creamtop half gallons are non-UHT.
I've gotten so spoiled, I no longer care for the taste of UHT milk, and it may not be quite as good as regular organic milk. |
Sorry, I suppose that didn't really answer your question. There are good conventional brands that I would get before UHT organic, personally. |
I think one of the Harris Teeter brand organic milks is not UHT -- I think the gallon size (the 1/2 gallon definitely is UHT). |
Get it delivered? South Mountain Creamery?
Or just make the drive to WF/MOM's. Or I'd go for UHT if lazy. |
Thanks, all! I love the idea of South Mountain Creamery, but the small amount that I would order would make the delivery fees unpalatable (one kid and one adult in our house are lactose intolerant, so a gallon goes a long way for the remaining adult+kid. I already have a farm source for meat and eggs.).
I end up going sort of near the MOM's a couple times a week, so I'll give that a shot. I'm sure I'll end up with a basket full of produce while I'm there, so it won't really be a single-item trip . |
Trader Joes |
Trader Joes, whole Foods, or MOMs. |
I get mine delivered. Organic. And not homoginized. |
sorry. Not organic. But. Not homoginized. And good practices. South mountain creamery. |
How do you drink the non-homogenozed milk? I tried it but didnt like the fact that the start of the bottle was too creamy and thin towards the end. Shaking it didnt help very much. |
Um, shaking helps tremendously. If it sits more than a few days you have to cut rhroughvthe cream the first time you open it but otherwise just a really super vigorous shake each time is all you need. And I mean a really decent shake. |
Sorry if this is a dumb question, but what is the problem with UHT milk? |
Straight from from the grass fed cow? |
Trickling springs organic. They're in glass bottles. |
