I'm interested in purchasing grass fed beef for my family - mostly ground beef and the occasional steak. Can anyone recommend a place to purchase it? Am I correct that its not feasible to get it fresh anywhere locally, you have to order it frozen?
Thanks in advance!! |
| Whole Foods. Not Frozen. |
| Trader Joe's seems to have a new "brand" of free range beef in their meat section. I didn't have a chance to really check it out, other than that the label says 'all natural' and 'free range.' It's not frozen. |
| I believe that if you go to some of the farmers' markets around here (like Falls Church, Takoma Park, probably there are more that will have it), you will find local producers who raise their beef with grass only. Or they may be grass-fed, but then are "grain finished". I think if you go and talk to them at the farmers' markets you can arrange to have them bring you meat that has not been grain-finished. |
| Yeah, the farmer's market at 14th and U has meat. they are closed for the winter now though. |

PP, seems like the deadline to order was 2/19. Did they ask you to pass this on today?

| Try Roots in Olney as well for free range beef. Balduccis in Bethesda sells it as well. |
| I once ordered some from a ranch in Colorado who sent a bunch to me in dry ice. The cost was somewhere around $100 for a lot of different cuts of meat. It was very good and very worth it. Sorry I cannot remember the name but I am sure there are several like this you can find online. |
No, they didn't ask me to pass it on. I just posted it for the contact info. You can contact them yourself for further info. |

Wegmans used to sell Kobi beef.
You can check there. |
| Thanks for your suggestions - I will check them out. |
| Whole Paycheck. Enjoy. |

The Organic Butcher in McLean (not very far from NW DC).
PS, you might also want to switch to grass fed dairy. The nutritional differences between corn fed and grass fed dairy are alarming. |
