7/24/23 Trial of Usman Shahid -- driver who killed two Oakton teens

Don’t parents in VA have to sign that they are responsible for the driver when they get a learner’s permit?

When my child got her permit in another state, the DMV made it very clear I was responsible for teaching her and making sure she was appropriately accompanied by a licensed adult and that no other teens could be in the car with her. They implied I was liable for any misconduct. We took it seriously along with the log of driving practice.

Aw! What a sweet boy! Trying to save his parents money...

I believe at the time they were able to trace the date on his dealer tags. He had temporary tags still.

In closing arguments, his attorney apparently said that when he saw the light was yellow, his only choice was to accelerate to get through the light. What a bunch of BS.

A news article has also been posted twice on this thread confirming this. It wasn’t a Reddit theory.

Correct. A Reddit thread also claimed the parents bought him the BMW four days prior, which I have not seen in any news report.

He was 18 at the time. Would he be responsible for himself, rather than his parents, and finding an appropriate licensed passenger to ride with him?

Probably just taking a stand against age gating.

No updates on Twitter. What is going on? Who is the idiot juror who thinks the 4 Runner driver absolves Shahid of guilt?

Update: the jurors went home at 5 after deliberating 1.5 hours. This article also provides confirmation he got the BMW a few days prior.

Hung jury or not guilty. Congratulations to his attorney.

Hope you’re wrong. Hard to have faith in the justice system if he gets away with it. Maybe victims’ families will have to take matters into their own hands.

His expensive lawyer acted like an inexperienced ambulance chaser the entire trial.

My guess is they are taking an evening before they put that spoiled rotten brat in jail for the next chapter of his life.

Is it too late for Shahid to take a plea deal? I’d imagine a plea deal being better than a guilty sentence.

If the jury is anything like the posters on this thread, they will be suffering from "reasonable doubt" about his guilt.

You can't appeal a plea.

Recent juror here. 1.5 hours is nothing for a serious case like this with so much testimony/evidence. I bet they continue through most of tomorrow as well.
