Why believe in god?

Anonymous
I cannot understand why people who are otherwise very smart and logical people believe in god. The idea of a god has never made sense to me, even as people in my family taught me about god and religion. I exclude the religious nut jobs from this question and want to address Those who are educated and feel they have a good deal of common sense in other areas. What makes you believe? Is there any LOGICAL reason behind your beliefs?

Why not? Really? That is a ridiculous argument! Why not believe in unicorns, jackalopes, and the old lady that lived in a shoe?

NP here. Why believe in one particular version of god, rather than another?

How many thousands of gods have been named and created by human beings, over tens of thousands of years? Why are all the other gods dismissible, but not your version?

It is all quite illogical.

Np here. I don't.

I'd wager those that do are afraid of death and it prevents them from being fully rational about it.

Religion provides community. Praying has medicinal value. People who have a religion are happier and healthier.

If there was that much benefit from believing in the others I would believe in those also.

Did you actually read the link?

Because there are no consequences for NOT believing in those things but there are for not believing in God? Did you even read the wiki page?

You don't have to believe to attend a church community. Prayer has no medicinal value-- stress relief, maybe. And the last point is just plain not true.

Because God is Truth, and I choose to live my life following truth. It's really that simple.

It is that simple for the simple minded. That's why you were excluded from the question.

No, it isn't. If you need faith to believe in it then how do you know it is the truth? With faith you could believe in absolutely anything at all.

There is an imaginary consequence for not believing and that does not effect me. I am familiar with Pascal's wager and it has no impact on my belief structure.

Please site your source if you'd like to be taken seriously. Otherwise state your opinions as such and not as facts.

Here we go again... the old cycling argument...

If you would open your eyes and open your mind, you would know that God is Truth. But you've already decided that you are right and the hundreds of millions of people throughout human history who have had a personal relationship with God -- many through Jesus Christ -- are wrong.

Therefore, you are denying yourself the Truth. God says, that's fine. Have it your way. Continue to believe your lies and follow your own merry way. What am I supposed to say?
