How long does baby wear newborn diapers?

Anonymous
Anyone have any idea how long baby will be wearing newborn diapers before moving
into Stage 1 diapers? I don't know how many newborn diapers to have on hand before
my due date, which is fast approaching! I guess it's best to have both newborn size
AND stage 1 in case baby turns out to be on the larger size?

Assuming your baby wears newborn (which some don't), figure you'll go through about 8 - 12 diapers a day in the very beginning.

The newborn packs are small, but if you have enough to last you 1 week, you can always send someone to run to the store for more when you need them. I think we used them for 3 weeks (7lb baby). But it's all so blurry - maybe we used them for 6 weeks!

Size ones you'll use for much longer.

depends on the baby -- my dd and ds were both pretty average sized (6.5 and 7.5 pounds) and I used the newborn sized diapers for about a month, I think. I'd buy one package of NB diapers (about 40), and another of size 1 diapers. When baby arrives, you will know if you need to buy more of one or the other.

Good luck!

Totally depends on the size of the baby and how quickly they grow. NB diapers are for up to 10 lbs and size 1 is usually 8-14lbs. You could give birth to a 9lb baby and skip NB or have a 6lb baby who gains weight very slowly.

I had a 9-lb. baby and never used newborns.

I had a 9lber as well - and we had to bring in Stage 1 diapers into the hospital since they had no newborns. Newborns were too small for my daughter.

My nephew is another one who never wore newborns.

Mine was over 9 lbs too (it was a total surprise), and didn't fit in the newborn diapers either, so I second the thought that you might not want to stock up on too many, just in case. Also, if this is your first kid, you might want to wait until you see what kind of diapers work for you and your baby before buying too many. I didn't think I would care, but DH and I became partial to one brand (the others all seemed to leak) and we ended up not using a ton of diapers for that reason as well.

If your baby is smaller, the size 1s will be too big and may leak. Agree with the recommendation to get a pack of each. If you have a smaller baby, you can go out to buy more - you will want to get out after a few days anyway!

Depends on size of the baby. Mine was over 9 lbs. and she was in them for a week at the most.

8.5 pounds and we didn't use the NB's either, they cut into her bottom.

9 lb baby, I used half a pack of NB and then moved on to 1..then 2...then 3.... and he's only 3 months old.

My DD was 8 lbs and we used one 48- or 96-pack (can't remember) of newborn diapers before moving her into size 1's.

Suggestion: don't buy a ton of any size, or save the receipt if you do. My DH bought 2 big boxes (144 each) of the size 1's and she grew out of them before we ever opened the second box. He ended up gifting them to friends who were expecting - you can do the same if you have extra newborn diapers.
