Antique/consignment furniture?

Anonymous
We need a few furniture pieces for our house. Love vintage and rustic pieces and would prefer to find something used if possible- or perhaps from a local furniture maker out of reclaimed/salvaged wood. Otherwise I feel like our budget only gets us World Market/IKEA and would prefer something more solid and well made. Found a great old buffet on Craigslist last year but for some things just haven't had luck for some other things (e.g. wine cabinet). I like Miss Pixies and was wondering if there are similar options out there (slightly cheaper would be good too, although I don't think her prices are too bad really)? Or even straight-up furniture consignment stores? Where have other folks been successful?

Estate sales. Most of them have photos that you can see in advance to see if they are worth going to. www.estatesales.net has all the listings, I think.

Do a search here for consignment furniture stores. Here is a list I made a while ago, some may not be around anymore.

Old Lucketts in Leesburg is great for things like this.

The store described as 'next to the walmart' on northbound Route in alexandria is Evolution Home. They post photos of new arrivals on their facebook page.

Thank you! Evolution Home is noted later on the list so I will take that entry out. This was compiled from responses on the DCUM listserv a while back which is why it's kind of messy, and I have not visited all of them, but I keep the list as a note in my phone and try to stop into places like this whenever I can. And it doesn't include Gallery St. Elmo in Bethesda which is one of my favorites!
- List PP, who has two 2000-SF homes furnished almost exclusively from craigslist, estate sales, antiques and consignments

Happy hunting, all!

I just wish more of these stores had regularly updated websites like Pixies. They mostly keep relatively short hours, and w/a FT job and 2 kids it's almost impossible to keep tabs on what they might have in stock. I check Pixies website every week and I've bought several things there over the years as a result.

Some of the local flea/farmer's markets might have stuff like that. I've seen furniture and salvage sellers at Eastern Market and the Saturday market at Courthouse metro. (I actually bought a beautiful dresser and a nice set of nightstands from a guy at Courthouse a couple years ago. He delivered them for $20 - I just had to help him carry them into the house.)

I also recommend Sloan and Kenyon's Auction House and their Consignment shop, both at the same location on Wisconsin Ave in Bethesda. There is another very good auction house in downtown DC, can't remember the name of ii, but it is directly across from the FBI building.

The antique stores in Kensington have some nice things - I got a '40s desk for $75 there once. And there's a consignment shop in Rockville on, like Parklawn, over by the tile store and pan American supermarket.

Reporting back that Kaboodle in Rockville was a disappointment. They have a few nice pieces, but you can see them on the website. It's a very small store and one of the ladies who works there is obnoxious and a loud mouth.

We went to Habitat for Humanity's ReStore in Silver Spring (just opened) and it had a lot of furniture, most of it in good condition. It's right next to the Babies R Us on Plum Orchard Drive.

They had a lot of dining sets, chairs, couches, and in the back they had their hardwood furniture; desks, kitchen cabinets, dressers. Also bathroom materials (sinks, toilets, and tile).

Some of the wood furniture looked just OK, but some of it was really nice and just needed a good cleaning (dusty, maybe minor scratches).

Good luck!

I had no idea this had opened- thanks! Way more convenient than trekking up to Gaithursburg.
