What's the deal with Cheverly, MD?

It's surrounded by some bad neighborhoods, but Cheverly itself seems to have a nice neighborhood feel. The houses are pretty reasonable and a decent 3/2 can be had for 300k. What's the outlook for this area? It seems to be a sleepy neighborhood without many plans for additional development that could raise property values. For reference I'm comparing to Hyattsville and all the Route 1 development. I want to be near a metro station and these two neighboorhoods seem to have the best balance of affordability, (relative) safety, and some appreciation potential.

Cheverly itself is ok, but once you go outside the immediate neighborhood it becomes sketchy. They have an Aldi in the closest shopping center. That explains a lot to me.

I believe a postman was robbed and killed in the neighborhood over the summer.

I have a good friend who lives there and loves it. There are areas near Landover with a Cheverly address and those parts are sketchy. I believe that is where the postman was killed. You want to stick with the town of Cheverly.

The Town area is very nice, cute Farmer's Market, quaint well-maintained houses, but it feels very isolated and sleepy to me. I hate where you have to drive through to get there, although I can understand the appeal for someone who works downtown.

My friends who live there are planning on private school for their kids already, so once you factor that in, they probably aren't saving anything. I guess if you were okay with the public schools our had no children, it would be fine, because the prices arguably already reflect the schools.

I'd be cautious about that. A friend finally sold her house last year in Cheverly at a loss. I think the school factor will keep prices down.

When did they buy? What price did they buy at and what did they sell at? Thanks.

My friend with a gifted child sends her to the local Elementary in cheverly. She seems to be happy with that level, although she has mentioned to me concern with the higher levels. There are magnet schools in PG, though, so those are options.

I would very seriously consider living there if it made any sense for our commutes.

We live in Cheverly and love it. Lovely leafy suburb with a small town feel, but easy commute to DC. Very family friendly with lots of family events happening all the time. In the summer there's the pool (there's a couple year wait list, though). We moved here from DC and wish we had made the jump years ago.

Folks, Charming community with amazing transportation advantages. Why not come to the November 22nd Community Market and see for yourself, no need to get random input ask the people who have chosen to live here. http://www.cheverlycommunitymarket.com/

of course if you don't have the time to visit the Cheverly Community Market, check out this blog written by a resident: http://ichoosecheverly.com/ it might help you understand "what's the deal?".

Cheverly is a great place to live with young kids. The community feel is amazing and there is always something to do. Check us out before you rule us out!

I have a friend there and visited her when she was hosting a new mom's group. A lot of really nice families showed up. I think it was organized via the neighborhood email list.

Cheverly is an awesome town! It's way better than close-in suburbs in VA, in my opinion. It's easy to get around. It's very community oriented, with the neighborhood market, a summer festival, lots of events for people with kids and without. There's the American Legion which is super cool. So many parks to explore. A community pool (requires membership, but it's AWESOME). A nature trail to walk, that the local boy scouts maintain. The residents are diverse and welcoming. We've moved here from Capitol Hill because we wanted a house, yard, and neighborhood feel but still wanted easy access to all of our favorite spots on the Hill. It's so close to the Hill (and easy traveling, as opposed to traveling to the Hill from Del Ray or somewhere in VA where you never know what the 395 traffic will be). My only wish is that Cheverly had a neighborhood coffee shop. If there was somewhere to walk and get coffee on a Saturday morning, it would be a complete utopia for my family. (I must mention that the every-other-Saturday markets that are held May-October, do sell coffee so my one wish is granted on those mornings!)

Cheverly is great! A good mix of young families and ones that have been there for 30 years. Lots of community involvement and a true neighborhood atmosphere. It would be nice if there were nicer amenities close-by, but it's not terribly inconvenient.

Cheverly is simply an amazing community. My husband and I grew up in Bethesda and Chevy Chase, and I've lived in Madison, Wisconsin (5 years) and Austin, Texas (9 years). While I feel fortunate to have lived in some really great places, Cheverly is hands-down the best place I have ever lived. As others have already stated, it's a leafy residential community that is just minutes from downtown DC. I work at Foggy Bottom and take the orange line metro to work every day - super convenient since the Cheverly stop is on the orange line. It's incredibly safe. We let our 9 year old ride her bike around town and walk to the nearby playground unaccompanied without a second thought. It's the kind of place where you know all of your neighbors and everyone looks out for each other. People bring you meals for weeks after you have a new baby, there's always someone willing to shovel your walk, give you a ride, or watch your kids in a pinch. People are active here - there's a running club and an amazing community swim & racquet club (with clay tennis courts!) When Cheverly residents see a need, they just make things happen. We have an incredible community farm market, yoga classes, an annual "Cheverly Day" celebration with fireworks that rival the ones downtown, a Turkey Trot 5K and 1K Fun Run/Walk, an annual food truck festival, Free Little Libraries, a brand new amazing playground... all right here in our neighborhood.

The neighborhood public elementary school is excellent, and the principal and teachers are top-notch. (Bonus: We can WALK our child to school.) Even if we eventually felt we needed to do private school in the middle/high school years, I would much rather live here and pay tuition than move.

It's true that we don't have the cute shops and restaurants that Bethesda and Alexandria have. That said, I can hop in my car and be at Eastern Market or on H Street in 10 minutes. Wegmans - the best grocery store EVER - is also just 10 minutes away. Hyattsville (5 minutes away) has Busboys and Poets, and Whole Foods and Pizzeria Paradiso are coming. We're 5 minutes from canoe rentals, a rowing club, and the best walking and cycling trails around... and far less crowded than Crescent Trail!

In a nutshell, coming from a girl who was born and raised in MoCo: I'd take Cheverly over MoCo anyday.
