Kids w/ food allergies/b-days

Anonymous
We're having one of the first birthdays for our DC's class at a local spot. They will have pizza and cake. Just curious what hosts typically do for the kids w/ food allergies? Don't know everyone yet, so not familiar w/ everyone's dietary restrictions.

TIA.

Send an email and ask the parents. My child will not eat pizza. No big deal. We feed her ahead of time.

We sometimes bring soy cheese pizza for our DS.

Kids with allergies typically bring their own food.

PP. it's awesome when the host brings something my son can eat (and it makes him feel not as much left out) but it's not expected.

I have a have a multi-food allergy kid. I dont expect hosts to do anything pro-active, except maybe avoid nuts. Otherwise, I'll contact moms I'm close with if I want to verify a menu beforehand, and with parents I dont know, I just bring something in my purse and decide whether to quietly substitute my kid's food when we get there.

+1. I always bring a cupcake. If pizza is served my kid just plays while the kids eat. He has celiac disease so he has a life time ahead of him of social isolation, he has to get used to it.

Thanks for thinking of allergies. We had a rough day yesterday--first bday celebration in kindergarten and the teacher/office staff failed to get my DD her special treats from the staff freezer--so it's really nice to have someone be so inclusive.

My dd has a friend with multiple food allergies. Her mom does not expect us to provide appropriate food, but I do try to an extent. No nuts at all (even though her nut allergy isn't severe, I'm not taking chances) and things like gluten/dairy free crackers available. I tried to make a cupcake for her one year and it was a disaster so I let her mom bring one, but if I can make small adjustments I'm happy to do so so the little girl doesn't feel too left out.

My DD just had a birthday and, knowing a new friend has nut allergies, I specifically got a nut-free cake. The girl told me she had been to 54 birthday parties and this was only the second time she got to eat the cake with everyone. It made me sad since she obviously counts the times she's the odd one out, but thrilled that I made the little effort to make sure she was included.

We're planning DD's party and have peanut and egg allergies in the class, so I'm actually planning on making crispy treats and serving fruit, veggies, egg free pasta, and sandwiches, among other snacks, but it'll be a nut and egg free party.

Aren't most standard birthday cakes nut-free? Or does nut-free mean not made in a plant that processes nut products? I shouldn't assume, but I would've thought yellow cake with vanilla frosting would be okay for a kid with a nut allergy (at least the not severe kind).

Mom of a kid with food allergies here - I don't assume the host will provide something my kid can eat (allergies are not peanut/tree nut or gluten). I have a batch of cupcakes in the freezer and we take one along to the party. If I know they're serving a meal, I check in with the host to see if there's something comparable I can bring along. We really appreciate when there's something he can eat at a party (usually fresh fruit) and non-edible party favors (food items we just switch out at home)

We bring our own but appreciate the thought!

I email parents ahead of time. I never have nuts or peanuts at a kids party in any case b/c cross contamination can happen to easily.

There are places that cater to certain allergies. For example, Z-Pizza does gluten free crusts and has vegan cheese options. So if you are dealing with celiac or dairy allergies, you can get food for them and everyone else.
