Kingstowne

We are considering moving to Kingstowne but aren't very familiar with the area. We have a toddler and another baby on the way. We've driven through and it looks decent, but would love some advice from current or recent residents. Thanks!

schools are an issue

OP here. We are going to rent to start with to decide if that's where we want to stay. So we are not thinking much about schools just yet.

I lived there for awhile (renting), and it's nice and convenient with all the stores around. There are lots of little kids too. Elementaries are fine (greatschools 7-8 range) but you may have concerns about Hayfield. But with how young your kids are I don't imagine that would be an issue.

I'd be careful you don't want to be trapped in those schools if the market slows down. The elementary schools are still subpar.

They said they are going to rent.

Too many people think that they will just be able to sell and move out once school hits. I don't think that's a wise decision. I would factor in private school costs in case you have an issue selling.

My apologies I was responding to other posts, I don't think it's an issue if you rent there. It's a great place before your kids go to school and after they are out of the house.

The Springfield Mall is getting renovated and is expected to be pretty nice once complete next month.

No one doubts the shopping is great around Kinstowne already. The question is the schools.

If someone wants to read the rancid FFXU site, they can find it.

Go away, and take your racist rants with you.

What racist rants? I googled sprinfield mall opening 2014 and the hits came to fairfaxunderground.com which is another anonymous message board where you can get honest opinions not fluffed up PR talking points fromhttp://springfieldtowncenter.com/

We have friends in the military who were delighted with Lane and Hayfield. I'd have to agree that the negative posts are coming from those with an agenda, quite possibly a racist one.

Just shut up. The schools are fine.

Go back to Pimmit Hills and polish your chain-link fence.

You mad that pimmit hills has better schools? I ain't from there but I sure as hell know real estate. We crossed off Alexandria from our list of acceptable public school options. I'd make plans to attend st Stephens for private school if moving to kingstowne.

Let's compare the test scores from the 2013-2014 SOL tests. I've randomly chosen 5th graders just because.

If you look at 5th grade writing/reading at Hayfield and Island Creek in Kingstowne, the pass rates are 68.5 and 79.8 at Hayfield and 76.5 and 79.4 at Island Creek. This is less than some of the "desirable" schools - I've chosen Orange Hunt in West Springfield and Kings Glen in Burke for comparison as both schools have good reputations and are 8/10 on Greatschools. Orange Hunt had pass rates of 86.1% and 90% on these tests, but Kings Glen had pass rates of 71.2 and 79.5. Hayfield and Island Creek probably have higher rates of English language learners overall so that's not entirely a surprise. In terms of 5th grade math in 2013-2014, Hayfield had a pass rate of 87.2, Island Creek was 81.7, Orange Hunt was 77.2. All schools are Greatschools 8/10. But the difference is you're much closer to major roads and highways by living in Kingstowne and it's a much more convenient community. You have to actually look at the test schools and the trends at each school (ie are scores trending up or down?) rather than just going by reputation. Also Kingstowne and PH are very different communities in entirely different locations so you really can't compare the two. But feel free to continue thinking that every house with an Alexandria address feeds to, like, Jefferson-Houston and TC Williams! Keeps values low in 22315 so average folks like me can still afford to live there.
