Ikea "Kura" bed?

Anonymous
We are upgrading my DS' bed, and am looking into the Ikea Kura. Does anyone else have this? If so, at what age did you let your child use the top "bunk" feature? Did you ever have problems with climbing the ladder. DS is 2.5, and really agile, but I'm pretty nervous about the bed arrangement. Pros are that there would be a lot of increased storage in his small bedroom (and we have DC2 on the way in 2 months), it would be cool, and DH is obsessed with it. Cons are that he will fall!!!

Both my kids have the Kura. I think they were 2.5 and 4 when we got them. 4yr old had it in the high bunk position from the start. Younger got it flipped up around 3.5. We never had any problems with the ladder. As long as you get the appropriate mattress there is a nice deep side so no worries about falling out. We did have to enforce the "no jumping from the ladder" rule a lot at first.

They've loved the beds and I like the extra space they provided. We just recently switched DS to a full-size regular bed (also Ikea) when he turned 11 and handed down his Kura to our nephew.

One problem we had with them is that some of the supporting slats broken when the kids & dad were roughhousing on the bed. My husband was able to replace them easily but definitely be aware of the weight limits.

I think that is the one that can be a low loft or on the floor? We had it for my son at about 3, he loved it. We got the tent cover over it. Underneath isn't that high but is great for toy storage. You can get one of the new Expedia bookcases or the one with the slide in bins (I don't like that as much)

LOVE ours. The Nyvoll dresser fits under it exactly.

I'm planning to get this and have the ladder side facing the wall, with a mattress on the floor underneath for our toddler. Then we'll flip it later on. There was a recent post on Apartment Therapy about Kura bed hacks: http://www.apartmenttherapy.com/20-ways-to-customize-the-ikea-kura-loft-bed-make-it-your-own-202703

Can you use this bed like a low bunk bed - one kid under on a mattress on the floor? Or is it not meant for that?

Yes! Lots of people use it that way...younger kid on a mattress underneath.

Thanks for the great input! Love the apartment therapy link ... though I feel like those are only going to be my grand aspirations in our house but not materializing into reality

Sending husband to Ikea this evening. Hoping we are still married by the time he finished building the thing

ProTip #2: wallpaper border fits very well on the panels. We used fishies.

Awesome! So I'll ask and risk exposing how much I lack creative skills -- but if I do decide to apply wallpaper border, is this peel and stick? Or do I need some fancy glue skills and tools?

It took my DH and his brother 5 hours to build it. Just FYI

We just got this bed. My kid tested it in the store and loved it. He'll start on the low end.

5 hours to put together?!?!?!

We have it in the low configuration right now for 4 year old DD. I wouldn't trust her just yet in the higher configuration, so we're probably going to switch in a year or two.

When we were briefly in another country for DH's job and lived in a tiny apartment, we bought a used Kura, installed it in the high position for older DS and I put a mattress underneath for then-toddler DD. It worked wonderfully, and they liked being in the same room.

Oh, and it does NOT take 5 hours to put together! I seem to recall it took my husband 2 hours, by himself, going slowly.
