2015 US News Rankings are out

Penn State boosters won't be happy. After last year's bump to #37, PSU is back to #48.

Northeastern University is now on par with BU.

Wake is out of the Top 25. Virginia Tech and GWU slipped back

Notre Dame and Vandy are on par with the Ivy League (Brown)

So PSU went from a rank near 50, shot up to 30s back to near 50 in the last 3 years? So the heinous S scandal gave PSU a big bounce? Makes me question everything USNWR does. This really bothers me, obviously.

Many question USNEWS, but it remains the only ranking that matters to schools because the USNEWS rankings drive applications.

Since they suck at their jobs reporting news and go out of business....their opinion is suspect . Shanghai world and times of London are the academic standard now .

Yawn. These rankings are bogus. They measure for "Ivyleagueness" and the Ivy League wins. Big surprise.

Every year they play with the formulas so there is no consistency from year to year.

"Shanghai world and times of London are the academic standard now ." says the college admissions officer on the way out the door after being fired in the wake of a drop in the USNEWS rankings.

Really? I assumed it was the UMD booster (who seems awfully busy putting out fires today for some reason...).

Every year we hear how USNEWS rankings don't matter, but there was an interesting WaPo article today detailing how even schools that didn't want to play the 'ratings game" have been forced to provide data to USNEWS.

Aren't the ranking most strongly correlated with endowment? It may well be that endowment is an indicator of academic strength as well but that's the key driver.

Endowment is correlated with ranking and ranking is correlated with interest in the school. Wake Forest had a record number of applications after reaching the Top 25 last year, it will be interesting to see if interest wanes this year.

Times of London weights reputation among peer institutions
US news weights size of endowment
Shanghai world academic weights academic strength of faculty and graduates .

Oh my goodness - I just checked my law school (William & Mary) in the rankings and the tuition is unreal!!! Graduated 12 years ago and in-state was $7k/year. Now it's almost $30k/year!!!!! That is bonkers. How are these schools getting so expensive?!?
