What was the attrition rate for your embryos between day 3 and day 5?

Anonymous
The title pretty much says it all. I have a fairly high number of embryos as of day 3, and as you know, they don't look at them on day 4. My transfer is scheduled for day 5, so I'm not going to find out how many made it to day 5 until 15 minutes before the transfer

So I'm curious - what was your experience? I know it's unpredictable but indulge me.

IVF #1 - 10 to 2, 1 of good quality
IVF #2 - 9 to 4, 2 of good quality

Varies by lab, clinic, your age and egg/sperm quality. If everything is normal, 50% of embryos could be expected to become blastocysts.

10 on day 3 to 5 on day 5.

Unfortunately none were chromosomally normal

13 on day 3
5 on day 5 (two of which tested CGH normal)

First ivf, from 11 to 1
Second ivf, 4 to 3

So fun how unpredictable it is.

12 day 3, 5 blasts on day 5.

OP here. Had my transfer this morning, on day 5. All 20 were still growing but not equally well.

There were four top quality embryos, and two of those were transferred. They are going to watch the rest and see how many look good enough to freeze by end of tomorrow, but should be (they say) at least two.

All 20 growing on day 5 is pretty good! Congrats! How old are you?

I just turned 41. The doctor was very clear, though, that not all 20 will make the cut, as they aren't all "where we want them to be." Only four were top quality as of today. Two were transferred, two will be stashed (at least) if all goes well.

That's great OP! My attrition rate was 50% from day 3 to day 5, leaving us with only two to freeze (having put in the 2 best looking options at day 3).

Our fresh failed and our two frosties both took.

Are you prepared for twins?!

Good luck! (And good luck getting through the 2WW)

OP here with a quick update. We have transferred 2, and apparently NINE more were good enough to freeze. I have to say this takes a bit of stress off if this cycle doesn't work - at least I have a stash to go back to.

OP - Do you mind if I ask where you went? I had similar stats at SG and then they decided that none were good enough to freeze...even though they were high quality. It was very disappointing, but I've heard (anecdotally) that SG has crazy strict freezing criteria.

OP, that's super! Are you also doing PGD?

I am at SG (isn't everyone??)

I was shocked, to be honest, at the 9 in the freezer, on day 5 they told me only two more look good , but I guess day 6 and day 7 brought more.

I am thinking about doing PGD on the remainder if this transfer fails but am worried about the cost. SG STILL didn't tell me how much PGD is out of pocket. My insurance covers 100% of IVF but I don't think PGD is included so I want to know how much it is before committing. If 5K, then probably no!
