need advice with middle school pop culture

I grew up as a nerd and I still am a nerd. My kids are nerds too and they are happy. Since I have to buy them new clothes anyway, I figure I might as well try something other than Target.

Local peeps, where do you shop for 12-13 year old girls and boys? What magazines are good sources for fashion trends? How about radio stations? What radio stations are good to listen to?

Thank you for helping a mom to help her kids avoid being the obvious outcast!

Justice is good for girls.
I don't know any tween/teens who listen to local radio. It's all online streaming like Pandora, Spotify, and I Heart Radio.

Thank you! Is there a particular channel on Pandora that is geared towards the teen crowd? Mine learn their music from riding the school bus when the bus driver puts music on....

Kiss FM stations are the typical teeny bopper top 40 with some hip hop in the mix. my kids shop at abercrombie and american eagle. I don't find them particularly expensive or inappropriate so I roll with it.

All the tweens I know (I have a gs troops of 6th graders) listen to local DC radio. No one would be caught dead at Justice. Clothes from mixture of places, but absolutely no sequins, flounces, etc., unless on funky sneakers. Read Twist, Tiger Beat, M17, etc. Would like to read People, InStyle, etc., if parents allow.

Wow, many things I need to check out with my kids. Thank you for helping me to avoid any fashion mishaps. You are all very kind. Please feel free to add your thoughts and opinion. They really help!

Most people set up their own Pandora channels, but there are shared channels for particular genres and artists. For your preteens, go with the Teen Disney stuff: Zendaya, Teen Beach Movie, Ariana Grande, etc.

Middle school?

Not Justice. That's for like 8 year olds.

Abercrombie. And Instagram. They all have Instagram accounts now. It's how they communicate. Your popularity is literally quantified by the number of followers you have.

The kids will tell you. Frankly, they looks like bums and most wear athletic shorts year round regardless of the temperature.

OP, Tell your kids to ask friends at school. "I like your shirt. Where did yo uget that?" A girl can say this but I don't know about boys.

I wish my mom had done what you're doing! I will do the same when mine reach MS, too.

My DD is 9 and I thought Justice was to young for her. Way too much sequins.

Please don't get your kid into Instagram unless he or she is 13, and then only with strict supervision. Terms of Service are there for a reason, and most younger kids really can't handle social media.

Questionable messages about body weight and underage sexuality.

Yep the messages from all those stores suck.
But it's still hollister, Abercrombie and American eagle.

H & M too.
