GDS is buying the Safeway and Volvo dealership to expand and consolidate its campuses.

Great for the school. Horrible for the neighborhood.

Why horrible for the neighborhood? Just because it's losing the Safeway?

Wow! That is huge. I never shop at that safeway anyways. It pretty much sucks.

I guess the volvo dealer saw the writting on the wall with Euro motors opening a volvo dealership in Bethesda.

I guess the tuition is going to go up and up...

Losing the Safeway, having to drive somewhere for middle-grocery shopping, having dead space on Wisconsin Avenue and having to deal with the car-pooling and suburban dopers, yes, pretty much a net loss.

Damn, that is some serious scratch. The total capital campaign including buildings must be over $100 million. That even assumes that they could sell the lower school site for a decent number. Wonder who the anchor donors are/is?

This is amazing news. I have a 1 year old and a 3 year old who I'm hoping will go to GDS and I live blocks from the HS - this will cut down on the years I have to endure the god-awful lower school carpool line...

Long time real estate person here. Expanding the presence of a strong school has never been a net negative for a neighborhood. Never. Just ask the property owners in Edgemoor, Bethesda. It might be a nuisance in the short term, but the rewards are tangible on the back end.

Wow, what a bunch of whiners! I hardly think that living next to a large grocery store and a car dealership that are both looking a little long in the tooth, with all of the automobile and truck traffic they entail, would be particularly desirable. I know, because I have lived in a similar neighborhood in the city in the past. Anyway, as a new GDS LS parent I find this very exciting news. I hope they can consolidate the campuses soon enough for my children to enjoy it. Slogging down to the current LS campus is not one of the things we are looking forward to, since it is so far away from all other aspects of our lives.

The description of the school in the Washington post is sickeningly idiotic " Georgetown Day, an institution whose students and alumni include the sons of daughters of some of the most prominent movers and shakers in the Washington area, "

As a Palisades resident who hates the GDS lower school traffic, I'm curious what will happen to the lower school campus.

Perhaps a low-security prison?

This also explains why they haven't spent a lot of $$$ upgrading the lower/middle school recently...

Palisades, get ready for a mega-development.
