Asperger's or Autism Kids w/ Bowel Issues

Anonymous
I have a 5 year old who was recently diagnosed with Asperger's and he has always had very soft stools. I noticed in a previous post that a fellow mom recommended that a child be checked for c-diff/fungus if their ASD child displayed bowel issues. I am curious if anyone could speak further on this topic. I spoke with our ped and strangely enough, the two can be linked...who would guess?

If your ped is knowledgeable about the gut connection to autism, you are lucky. The theory is that disturbances in the gut cause neurological symptoms, including ASD. Most regular docs will say that Aspergers can't be cured and that the only treatment is ABA and social skills groups. Many parents say their children have lost their diagnosis after treating their gut problems and changing their diets.

That is awesome that your ped recognizes the connection! There is a great book out there, written by a parent of a child with asperger's syndrome. She talks about healing the gut and other biomedical interventions. It's called Hope for the Autism Spectrum by Sally Kirk and you can get it on amazon.com.

my autistic 4 year old has very soft stools as well. I was amazed when i found out there was a connection between the two. I haven't had him checked for fungus or anything yet, but I think we will do that soon. I always hoped it would get better as he gets older, but it never did.

I have heard that this book is very highly recommended as well:

Juicing is supposed to help with gut issues. I don't know because I have not tried it. I think the author of gut and psychology syndrome recommends it. There is definitely a gut connection, so it's worth exploring all avenues -- bacteria, yeast, in particular. There's something called Specific Carbohydrate Diet (www.pecanbread.com) that's supposed to help clear the bacteria in the gut that causes autistic symptoms. Parents have reported it works.

I was a nanny for a child with Asperger's for three years and we still see each other a few years later. After testing, it was determined that their son had gut problems related to too much yeast. There was an improvement after probiotic and enzyme treatment. They tried to change his diet, but that did not go well. There are enzymes available for casein and gluten sensitivity. They saw Dr. Compart in Laurel to get the testing and guidance on vitamin therapy and the gut issues.
