Please post your DC´s ERB scores, and whether your DC made it into or is already at a private school, Big Three or otherwise.
DH is stressing out over our DC´s scores, which were all under 60%, notwithstanding 99% WPPSI and WISC scores and strong performance so far at school. I tell him it is only one thing schools look at. He thinks it is domesday. |
In each category, all at 40% for 2nd grader at Beauvior.
Teacher says not to worry. |
Tell him not to worry. We were around the same range in erb and had 97 wisc and we were accepted at a top tier school. Other things mean so much more -- visit, letters, teacher recs. |
I mean visit, teacher recs and school record. Not letters. |
Depends if you are looking at National norms or independent school norms. IS norms can be 20-30 points lower than national norms. We also found that SSAT scores were significantly better than ERB IS norms. DS was in the 90's on all parts on national norms, although did progressively better each year. DD was in 80's-90's by middle school. Both kids in independent schools. DS applying to some of Big3's next year for high school. Also keep in mind that ERBs are more subject driven so if the schools curriculum is somewhat different than the test they may not have covered the material yet. It seems to even out later on. I suggest you talk to your school about the results as they can be very helpful. |
The ERB level 1 and 2 test results don't provide a national norm - only suburban and independent norms. According to some online research I found the ERB test is taken by, roughly, 80th percentile children and above (based on nationalized norms).
I found the following data online that gives some further information on what the scale score means (our child is above these limits, but scored in the 50th percentiles on the ERB). The scaled scores required for application to the Center for Talented Youth at Johns Hopkins are as follows: * Schools administering the CTP 4 can use the following chart of scaled scores since there are no national norms for Level 1 and 2 of the CTP 4: LEVEL 1 Reading Comprehension: Spring 1 >= 319 scale score; Fall 2 >= 323 scale score Mathematics: Spring 1 >= 251 scale score; Fall 2 >= 276 scale score LEVEL 2 Reading Comprehension: Spring 2>= 330 scale score; Fall 3>= 334 scale score Mathematics: Spring 2>= 285 scale score; Fall 3>= 294 scale score |
What grade do kids first start taking the ERB's? |
Beauvoir gives the ERBs in 2nd and 3rd. DC scored in the 6th to 9th stanines this year, an improvement over 4th to 8th stanines last year. |
Aren't the ERBs achievement, while the WISC is IQ (or some remote proxy thereof)? So they would be measuring different things.
I'm sure somebody will correct me if I'm wrong, although my kids have taken the ERBs and I should know this. |
The good news is, you can do something about achievement. |
My experience also is that my child dramatically improved from the 2nd to the 3rd grade ERBs. I think it also is a function of whether the subjects on the ERB were covered by the class yet. What they need to tell you, but would not, is how your child's ERB score compared to the rest of their grade's score. Otherwise the numbers are, to me, meaningless. |
