| I am really saddened for his family. What a horrible thing to happen to anyone. I am also surprised there is not a running thread on this (although I guess I may have missed it). |
|
Me too. Although there is much information on the internet about their failure to admit that he is autistic and failure to treat the autism. This one is interesting - Scientology is creepy.

| My prayers to the family as well. And yes, the potential for autism is a little disconcerting, although I'm not sure why it wouldn't be treated due to Scientology beliefs. ? I thought they didn't believe in mental illness, but autism is not mental illness. |
| My first thought was Scientology is creepy too. I still feel that way. But then I realized that the loss of a child is one of most difficult and painful situations that ANYONE will ever endure and my heart goes out to the family and all others that have lost a child. The pain must be unimaginable. |
| autism to me would seem to be a mental illness due to the fact it has something to do with an illness to the brain function which in turn affects ones physical attributes. |
|
Huh? That's kind of a stretch. Unless we are talking about severe cases of autism, which I believe Jeff wasn't, it does not affect physical attributes.
I didn't realize he was possibly on the spectrum. I have a son who unfortunately has both autism and a seizure disorder. Sadly enough, epilepsy is a co-morbid diagnosis of autism. My heart goes out to them. Seizures are the most scariest events in a parent's life. To feel so helpless and unable to change the course of the seizure is extremely painful. All I can do is pray that he will make it out of it alright and that he will bounce back. It typically takes my son 2 weeks to bounce back from a seizure.
I wonder if Jeff was taking medication for his seizure disorder. |
| PP here, nevermind, I didn't think of it from a perspective of a scientologist, so yes, I guess one could say that autism in their eyes would be a mental illness and thus non-existent. |
| Such a terrible tragedy, it's been haunting me. From what I understand, the anti-Scientology folks have been speaking out and the Autism support organizations have been encouraging the Travoltas so speak out about their son's condition. What about letting them grieve this terrible loss first??? |
| Larry King is disgusting. He makes a show and makes money with people's tragedy. Let the Travoltas alone. |
Ditto, it doesn't matter if they are Scientologists or their son was autistic-they've lost a child-leave them alone right now! |
I'm sorry, that sounded a little bit too much like 'leave Britney alone'. The point I was trying to make is that this is not the time to speculate on the family's life choices or situation, but the time to leave them alone and let them grieve the way they choose, not what other's feel is appropriate. Think about it-if a close friend had lost a child, would you be sitting around talking about how weird they are or what they could have done differently?-I don't think so-you would support them in any way possible. I don't think all this media attention regarding Scientology and autism could be considered support. |
Actually yes, I would. I would talk trash about my friends if they had not medicated their child b/c they were brain washed by a cult. I would say they were irresponsible and negligent for their child's tragic death. I would not have a friend who was a wacko scientiologist and anyways they are not allowed to be friends with a "Suppressive Person" (SPs) which is their idiotic scifi term for non-believers. Travolta and Cruise and the rest of the bunch are not just "weird" as you describe, but they are cult members who force the teaching of a science-fiction writer by the name of L. Ron Hubbard on their childern. These are the same people who think post-partum depression does not exist. |
| I wasn't aware that you were personal friends with the Travoltas and was privy to how they treated their child's condition which you also seem to know all about. I'm no proponent of Scientology but I don't think it gives any of us license to bash these people when that are at their lowest-you sound somewhat insensitive and I sincerely hope you never have to face tragedy-you may find out who YOUR friends really are. |
I wouldn't worry too much; I doubt they read DCUM. |
