Need advice re: SACC and waitlist number

Anonymous
Hi there-

My DS will attend Haycock Elementary for the 2014/2015 school year. I work F/T and need before and after care. We're number 65 for before and 130 for after for Haycock and I get that we have zero chance of getting a spot in the fall. We are number 8 for before care at Lemon road--can anyone tell me if I have a shot of getting in with that number? Also, does anyone know that FCPS will bus from Lemon Road to Haycock next school year?

I'm excited about having my child attend FCPS but I wish they could guarantee before/after care like other school districts...

Thanks!

FCPS will not bus SACC students from LRES to Haycock next year. That sort of transportation only occurs if there are students around the base school who are going to the Center school, not needing a new bus route just adding a bus stop.

Next year, there will be no LRES base school students attending Haycock because Haycock kicked them all out due to overcrowding, so no buses will go in that direction. LRES starts school at 8:05. That is why there is such a short wait list for before school care.

Thanks for the translation! If anyone has any suggestions for before care, please send them! This is so frustrating as both my husband and I work full time and will definitely need before care.

Not an option--my DS goes to school downtown at my work. Does anyone know of childcare centers that will bus to Haycock especially for before care? TIA.

Call Haycock and ask. They'll know all the buses that drop off and pick up.

Perhaps Franklin Sherman b4 school SACC? The county has cancelled 4 after school buses thus far from Haycock to other School SaCC sites and two other private after school places. Call the school and ask about this. You should have a plan in the works now, but there is a possibility he will get in B4 school SACC. Or maybe get in a few months after school starts. My child was 80 something 2 years ago and got into B4 SACC by the time they started K. We got lucky that year. However we are still waiting for after school. Prob won't get a spot for 2nd grade. Hopefully 3rd! Can you make a plan with a neighbor? A friend? I know how hard it can be.

Once you're in SACC, do you have to reapply for the following school years ( I.e they start with zero enrollment in July and wait for parents to callIin and request a spot all over again)?

No, as long as your account is in good standing.

Definitely call! An official letter went out only about Afterschool busses canceling services to other SACC sites. There was no mention of before school busing. You could also call transportation or SACC and ask.

I've been on the waitlist for Haycock for 3 years as a backup school and still haven't gotten called. Definitely a downside to that school.

It's Elementary has a before and after school program that picks up children at Haycock and drops off. I looked into it two years ago but opted to hire a babysitter before school and went to Northern Virginia Christian Children's center after school. It worked out OK for the year. We are at Lemon Road's before and After school Program this year but will most likely pull out due to the transportation issue also and go back to a private child care in our home. Another option you may consider if you get into Lemon Road since your children are just starting school is filling out a pupil placement form and ask to attend Lemon Road school due to child care issues.

Does anyone have any additional recommendations for after care? I doubt I'm getting into SACC at Chesterbrook for the fall?

The Methodist Church on Kirby (down the road from Chesterbrook) has before and after.
