Need to replace laptop. Should I get a Chromebook?

First of all, I DID search the archive and the most recent thing I saw about Chromebooks is from March 2013 http://www.dcurbanmom.com/jforum/posts/list/295323.page#3359694 . I'm looking for a more recent discussion.

I need to replace my laptop. DH suggested a Chromebook but I'm really not tech saavy and was hoping for some DCUM help. I've got 3 kids (the oldest is 10) who we rarely allow to use the computer because they really don't need to. They WANT to but they don't need to. We also do not have an iPad, iPod or DS. We have a Wii/Xbox. We gave up cable for an antenna and Roku/Boxee. I use the laptop primarily to access the internet and ocassionally use Word/Excel. I will also sometimes tether it to my smartphone to download files/pictures. I occassionally log into work via a VPN.

It seems the Chromebook might suit me but I thought I'd see if anyone out there has experience with it. Thanks!

I'd like one too, but I need to use word and excel and I don't think you can.

That was our dilemna also. We went with a simple laptop and it's been fine. The chrome is too limiting.

You need a "real" computer to log into work via a VPN. Also, you can use Word and Excel with a Chromebook, but it may create formatting issues. I wouldn't do it for anything you need for work or school.

Personally, I'd get an ultrabook, but a regular laptop would be fine. I don't think a Chromebook or a tablet would be enough.

Chromebook is really great but you do evertything in the "cloud". What that means is, for instance, you write on Google docs, not Word, and you save it in your Google account, not on your personal device. You can then access it from anywhere. Personally, I think it rocks. Cheaper, lightweight, no security firewall crap to deal with. You can download apps but not software.

My boyfriend has a Chromebook and overall he likes it, but doesn't like that it doesn't have a hard drive so nothing can actually be saved to the computer. It's all in the cloud. So no programs, but you have to use things that are internet-based.
