What is the best nickname for Caroline? (Or no nickname?)

Anonymous
My daughter Caroline is 20 months. When I was pregnant I was pretty clear that I did not want a nickname. I am not a huge fan of Carrie. My brother thought Callie would be a great nickname and others suggested Carly. I like both, theoretically, but I think that Caroline is such a pretty name and I just like that better so I never "gave" her one of the nicknames. Well, I started calling her "C" in texts bc it was easier to abbreviate, and then my friends started calling her C, and soon it developed into CC, and now EVERYONE is calling her that. People spell it Cece.

So, I know this is not the world's biggest problem, but I don't want my kid to be called Cece for the rest of her life. Should I start actively calling her a different nickname? Is a nickname inevitable? I didn't think that Caroline was a name like Katherine or Elizabeth where it was inevitable.

Good luck. Things like that tend to stick. Cece is kind of cute, BTW. If you keep calling her Caroline, she'll respond to both, and CeCe might stick as just a family "pet" name.

I think nicknames are such terms of endearment. They can't be pushed like her name is Caroline but we call her Carly. If it just 'happens' naturally that is the true nickname. It's cute!

I knew a CiCi (just in case it sticks and you want to work with spelling)

btw it won't be for the rest of her life; when she changes schools or goes to college it's time to reinvent. If she grows up as Caroline she'll probably change it to CeCe and if she grows up CeCe she'll probably want to be addressed as Caroline!

my niece is named Caroline and I call her C-line (a take on "sea lion," she's a swimmer) but just for fun; not her permanent nn.

Just call her Caroline and people will get back to that eventually. It's a great name.

Seriously? Why would you choose a beautiful name like Caroline and call her "Carlotta?" Which is a) ugly and b) not a nickname for Caroline.

Caroline by itself is gorgeous, but I love Cece as a nickname.

No, a nickname is not inevitable. If you want to call her Caroline, then call her Caroline!

Hmmmm. Ideas:

Caro (character from ya-ya sisterhood)
Ro
Lina (pronounced Leena)

I don't really think there are good options. Carrie is best. I think she can go by Caroline all the time as pp said.

Caro - spanish nickname for Carolina
Cate - I have a friend Caroline who is a Cate

or...

"I think we're just going to be calling her Caroline for a while and see if it sticks. Thanks!"

Nicknames are definitely not inevitable. We have an Elizabeth and she has always been Elizabeth.
