Closet organization system - Ikea Algot versus Home Depot closetmaid or Martha Stewart

Anonymous
I'm looking to install a closet system in a reach in closet. Elfa is out of my price range even with the sale and I'm looking at ikea Algot or Home Depot Closetmaid or Martha Stewart. They appear to be relatively comparable in price. Does anyone know if either is better in quality or easier or harder to DIY install?

Closetmaid is really good quality, though I've never installed it myself.

Had California Closet in our last home.
We redid our new home before moving in and used Martha Stewart at Home Depot. It's great.
Absolutely love it. Laundry bag that fits right in is also the best.

Are these systems helpful for truly tiny closets? We have four closets (other than those in the basement) in our narrow 3-bedroom house, and they are all quite small. They are also disorganized and probably underused. I would love to find a way to make them more useful.

We have done both bedrooms in our (teeny tiny) house with the HD Closetmaid system and are very pleased.

DH and I are quite handy, so we had the necessary tools, skills, etc. It has held up REALLY well, and has lived through several "adjustments" as our needs changed.

10:02, I think they are MOST helpful for really tiny closets, bc the tiny-ness and narrow-ness often means underutilized space. these really help you go vertical, and get more than just the standard "rod and shelf" deal.

However, if your closets are narrower than the standard basket/drawer things, you might do better with a different system?

10:02 here--I guess they aren't THAT teeny; I just grew up with walk-in closets and ours are definitely not that. They can fit a 6-year-old playing hide-and-seek, though. I think they are normal small closet size. I will add this to my list of NY resolutions: organize closets.

Thanks for the advice.

our builder left before finishing out our closets (long story), and i looked at tons of closet systems. i kind of wish i had them for the "look" of them, but i actually ended up putting up regular double rods myself, along with wood shelves myself. (screwed thin wood supports into the studs for the shelves and the shelves rest on top). it looks kind of old-school, but our house is an older style so it looks kind of custom-original. i've wondered if others would think our closets are neat or if they'd think eewh!

PP here -- the wood is stained to match the room in some closets and painted to match or coordinate in others.

We priced out all options (including Ikea) and ClosetMaid came out considerably cheaper. Yes, it's not as fancy, but it looks fine and gets the job done.

DH planned and installed our Home Depot system. It wasn't the wood option but the wire one. We do have a kitchen pantry done in Elfa and yes, it's nicer looking but I felt more worth it b/c of all the drawers we have in there.

In our bedroom closet, we do have some pull out drawers that I think are poorly designed and definitely not smooth -- they are hard to open in fact. Fortunately we keep his clothes in them so I don't have to get too upset on a daily basis ). In terms of the install, DH is extremely handy and did it all by himself (10 foot walk in closet with installation on 3 sides). One thing he did, which I highly recommend, is that he measured the height of the large tupperware we use for clothes storage and built the upper level shelf to accommodate that perfectly. So the tupperwares ring the top shelf of our closet. He built that measurement into the overall design.

I have a Martha Stewart System in my closet. The quality is very good, it looks nice and it's very functional. I still feel like my hanging clothes are crammed in there, but it's not Martha's fault my closet is teeny.
