Muffins and cupcakes from Costco

Anonymous
Just bought cupcakes and muffins from the bakery, to be served this Saturday night and Sunday morning. Should I freeze them or are there enough preservatives for them to taste the same come the weekend? Silly question, but we don't eat this stuff.

I would think they might get kind of stale by then.

They should be fine as long as you don't open them.

Wait, do they actually bake them there? That would shock me. But if they don't then they're probably shelf stable for another month because they're probably already a month old.

Yes, they bake them there.

What's the sell by date on the packaging? If it is Saturday or beyond, I think you are fine.

You have obviously never shopped at Costco- they have an amazing bakery, right on location, with fresh baked goods every day. The artisinal breads are pretty damn good and rival many "fancy" bakeries in this area. Costco is actually a high-end warehouse store that targets customers with 6 figure incomes. Don't knock it till you try it!

OP here, I think so, but not certain

It's the 17th. Maybe if I warm them in microwave for 20 seconds, they'll seem fresher?...

That's what I was wondering, kind of like twinkies that last a year because of all the preservatives...

I freeze Costco muffins all the time, individually in ziploc sandwich bags (not even freezer bags). They stay that way up to a month and don't seem to suffer at all. Sit them on the counter for a couple hours and you'd never know they were ever frozen.

NO, don't do that. Unless they are eaten immediately when they come out of the microwave (and even then sometimes just the time it takes to eat it is too long) microwaving can actually make it worse.

Warming in a regular oven might work, but be careful not to dry them out.

I wish I'd seen this earlier. You're right. Didn't work. Must buy at last minute or freeze next time.
