dairy: is chocolate considered dairy?

Anonymous
Is kefir? I am trying to avoid dairy and cutting out cheese and milk is obvious. What do you think? What constitutes dairy? I don't have an allergy per se...

Does it contain an ingredient that came out of the udder of a mammal? Then yes, it's dairy.

Some chocolate contains milk products, but you can get dairy free chocolate. Kefir is a fermented yogurt product. It's dairy.

Check the ingredients. Some chocolate contains dairy products (like milk choc) and some don't (like dark choc).

Kefir is a dairy product. Not sure if you are avoiding all dairy or just lactose but they do make a lactose free kefir. You can get it at Whole Foods.

To echo the pp, yes. Kefir is dairy and many chocolates contain dairy. Are you avoiding ALL dairy derivatives (including whey and casein) or just obvious sources of dairy?
Enjoy Life Foods has dairy free chocolate chips, chocolate chunks, and chocolate bars. Sundrops are also dairy free (contains soy though)
So Delicious makes a cultured coconut milk product like Kefir. I think there's also one that uses almond milk as its base.

Milk and milk derivatives are in a lot of products.

oreos are non-dairy, if you wish to have a choclately snack

Also be careful of ingredients like whey protein, which is also dairy. Some chocolate chips list whey, not milk or milk solids.

Dark chocolate is non-dairy. Read the label to be sure. Don't pay extra for "non-dairy" when a better quality 70% cacao bar is cheaper.

Enjoy Life chocolate chips are vegan, so definitely dairy free. WF sells them.
