no, not another name thread... this is a cheese question :)

I realize that this has been discussed, but I wanted to run it by you moms again. I am desperate to have my favorite salad, but it has blue cheese in it. The salad comes from a pretty yuppie take-out joint in the city, and it's amazing. My understanding it that all cheese is fine during pregnancy if it's pasteurized. Given that most cheese in the US is pasteurized, it should be fine, right?
Do I suck it up for the next several months, or indulge from time to time?

Why don't you ask the restaurant if they use pasteurized cheese or not?

Yep, I was definitely planning on asking. If they say it's pasteurized, blue cheese itself if fine, right?

Yes. Virtually all commercially-sold cheese in the US is pasteurized.

I have eaten blue cheese in salads at Jaleo, and then remembered I shouldn't. I was fine.

Are we talking @ Sweetgreen? You are fine.

Eitherway, as PP said--it's likely pasteurized (though I am not sure about what I ate at Jaleo), so you are fine.

You're fine!

If it's the kind of place that makes the salads and then lets them sit at room temp for a day, I'd worry a bit more. But only a bit.

I've eaten all manner of blue cheese (and goat cheese, feta, etc.), provided it's pasteurized. It's the raw stuff to look out for, which is mostly found in specialty cheese shops/restaurants.

Enjoy your salad!

The pasteurized cheese is no more risky than the salad itself. Any listeria would be from contamination during handling, which can affect any prepared, cold foods.

I was happy to see that Cosi posts on their website that all of their cheeses are pasteurized. I had a wicked craving for the Signature Salad a few times and the blue cheese is the best part! If they have a website with FAQs, you might also check there.

Thanks, ladies. The place I'm talking about is Jetties. Love their salads! They do so much business that the food turnover seems very fresh.

Just don't name your kid Blue Cheese. Pasteur is ok, but only for a boy.

..I thought blue cheese itself was bad because of the mold. No?

I've been avoiding most cheese besides basic pasteurized sharp cheddar because, frankly, I can eat a LOT of cheese. Like, "where'd that wheel of brie go?" amounts. a cheese shop is deadly for me. But I thought blue cheese itself was bad?

I've been avoiding feta/goat/blue regardless of pasteurized. I've been doing it wrong, I guess!

No reason to avoid pasteurized cheese. And actually, women in Europe eat the non-pasteurized stuff as well. Enjoy your cheese.

I'm sure its pasteurized and I'm sure it's fine.
