Swine Flu epidemic in Mexico (and possibly US)

I don't understand why you posted the statement "Keep your sick kids home, period."

No one here was asking for advice or suggestions on what to do with sick kids, so it didn't make a lot of sense to me.

What are you talking about? No one here has stated that their kids were sick. No one is asking if they should keep their kids home when sick or not.

Do you have multiple windows open and are you confusing this with another thread? Or are you just a confused person in general?

An American woman died in Texas

OP referenced closed schools, hence the mention of keeping sick children home.
Go ahead (in unison): "HUH? DUH? I'm so confused because it's not saying what I want it to?" What exactly is your problem, anyway?

yes

And according to the article ". . . the woman had other, chronic health problems, but didn't offer specifics."

The little boy from Mexico who died in the States also had other health issues.

1938: if everyone thinks you live in left field, then chances are you do. After 22 pages no one even cares to remember or look at what the OP was originally asking.

You're just a little too late and way behind.

What makes you assume 'everyone' thinks she lives in left field? After 22 pages, if there is consensus on anything at all, do you really imagine it's whether 1938 lives in left field? Oh brother. (I'm not 1938.)

the woman that died had delivered a healthy baby while in the hospital. so sad. she was only 33 yrs old. I really wish they would give more info on these 'underlying medical conditions'.

Interesting article from Washington State -- one family's experience with likely swine flu:

http://www.thenewstribune.com/news/local/story/731992.html

The mom makes it sounds like their symptoms were "severe" but I think that's just the way flu -- real flu, not "I have a bad cold and think it is the flu" is, in general.

One thing that concerns me though is her mention that she couldn't afford Tamiflu so she just got it for her sons. I thought that there was Tamiflu available for this from the federal government (Strategic National Stockpile). There are a lot of people in this country who do not have money for treatment.

I heard on npr that the manufacturer was selling it at a deep discount, but maybe that was only to the government.

It's probably hard to drive around looking for a good buy on Tamiflu when you have a fever, throwing up, vomiting.... probably tihs woman could have gotten treatment from somewhere, but when you are sick and your kids are sick, it is hard to find those great deals!

Tamiflu isn't a cure-all - I thought once you had severe symptoms it was too late. It needs to be taken soon after exposure I believe, to really work.
