Should I take the Palisades Parkway to the Tappen Zee Bridge?

Anonymous
Apparently there is major construction on the Garden State Parkway, which was my preferred route to Maine tomorrow. Any advice on avoiding it? I refuse to go over the GW bridge. How is the Palisades Parkway along the Hudson to the Tappen Zee Bridge? Help!!!

Yes. Absolutely the right way to go. Beautiful view, and doesn't have the annoying toll plazas like Garden State. Totally worth the extra few miles of NJT to get there.

Just don't tell anyone. Then it will get crowded. For some reason people don't know about this.

Wow! Thanks PP. It seems like such an obvious choice. Why don't more people take it?

Be VERY careful when on NJT. The exit for the Palisades is some wacky middle lane exit and can easily be missed.

The Palisades is a perfectly fine way to go, but getting on/off it can be slightly tricky, and if there isn't construction etc. we usually decide it's not worth getting on/off.

I typically go up the NJTP and around exit 9 or so, start listening to the 880 and 1010 traffic reports. Then I will take the route that sounds the fastest. I choose from the GW to cross the river then I-96, the Henry Hudson Highway or Major Deegan Highway north to I-287 or the Palisades to the Tapenzee bridge. My route of preference is the Major Deegan. I find fewer problems on the Major Deegan than any of the other routes. The Palisades is nice, but it does take you slightly wide and adds a considerable distance to the route when it bends west before getting on I-287. But nothing beats the traffic reports on 880 and 1010 for figuring out the best route through the Bronx and Westchester county.

I felt badly that I couldn't go up to the Cape this long weekend. Kinda glad now.

I go 270 to Frederick, 15 to Harrisburg then 84 to Tappan Zee. Longer, but no Traffic, except a gas truck blew up on an overpass in Harrisburg the other day, not sure if lanes are restored yet.

This thread is so awesome. I want to print it out and stuff it into my glove compartment.
