My DS was just prescribed Zantac for reflux. How soon should we see a change? |
If you're like us, never. We had to go to Prevacid and even that took a few weeks before we really saw a difference. Reflux is HELL. Good luck. |
We saw a change right away and it continues to work, although it doesn't make it go away entirely. I understand that you have to wait longer for a change (if it is going to work for your baby) if the baby already has some erosion internally, because then that needs to heal.
I've wondered, do people find that giving the Zantac at particular times of day work better than others? |
OP here..I don't know about the times of day working better, but I just gave my DS a few doses and I'm finding I have to do it when I feed him. He doesn't like the taste and tries to spit it out a little. I try to chase it with his bottle. |
Did you get the compounded alcohol free version? That will help with the taste. My DS actually came to like it. I made a game out of gving it to him, complete with sound effects.
I took several days maybe as much as a week to see a difference. He has been on zantac for >8 months and it continues to work but we have had periods where it seeemed to stop working and we had to have an increase in dosage, so you and your ped will need to stay on top of that. |
hmmm...I have no idea. CVS didn't even give us dropper to give it to him in. I have to use the one in our infant tylenol bottle. |
I have identical twins. One improved nearly immediately with Zantac. The other did not - and ended up on Prevacid and even that didn't help so much.
We got Zantac flavored with grape. Good luck -reflux is no fun!! The good news is that eventually they DID outgrow it. |
We saw the difference within 2 days. A miracle |
16:37 here. The ped told me that he didn't think CVS did the compounded alcohol-free prescriptions so we went to a specialty pharmacy (we went to Knowles Apothecary). I would highly recommend going that route for your refill-- maybe not quite as convenient but I really like the pharmacists and it's worth a little extra trouble (btw I've always gone to CVS before this). The ped said the alcohol made the medicine taste like sh*t. (plus I'd prefer DS not to have alcohol if I can help it).
Good luck! |
16:37 again. Sorry I meant to also say that you could probably taste it to see if it is the alcohol-free, compounded version (it also would probably have an expiration date of about a month b/c they don't last as long w/o alcohol) |
