We are looking to purchase a home that feeds into Darnestown elementary and Lakelands middle school. Currently are kids are toddler age so we are still a few years away to entering school. Any information, opinions or thoughts on these schools. We are transplants so not familiar with the schools. Thanks. |
I taught at Darnestown until a couple of years ago, when my position was cut to part-time and I changed schools. I would have sent my kids there in a heartbeat. School building is old, but that's probably the only complaint anyone can have about it. The school population is small, which means the principal seems to know all the kids. Lots of "lifer" teachers that have been there for years. Tons of PTA support and extra-curricular activities.
Search the MD Public Schools forum and you will probably find some threads about it. |
Great area. You can't go wrong |
I hear great things about Darnestown ES. We were looking in that general area, but ultimately chose to stay in the Quince Orchard HS district, since it is "supposedly" better than North West. Our children are a little older than yours so the HS was a factor. |
Darnstown ES goes to QO. no? |
Darnestown residents can go to Jones Lane ES or Darnestown ES.
Darnestown residents can go to QO or Wooton. The OP mentioned Lakelands middle school. I am not sure where the cut off is for Darnestown but there is a chance that some kids go to Kingsview MS and Northwest (but that cut off is more the Potomac side of Darnestown - like Seneca RD) Some Lakelands kids go to Northwest. Not sure where the cut off is for that. The OP wants Darnestown/Lakelands/QO. |
We're zoned for Darnestown, Lakelands and Northwest as are most people I know in the area (near the Harris Teeter). Our kids aren't school-age yet but the neighbors have nothing but good things to say about the elementary school. Also its just generally a great place to live. |
Nobody in Darnestown goes to Wootton. They either go to Quince Orchard or Northwest depending on which side of 28 they live on. |
OP here. Thank you everyone. We are looking near the Harris Teeter area. |
There is part of Darnestown that goes to Wooton. |
What part? How does it snake around QO zone? |
Our Catholic School gets a lot of locals from middle school. One of the middle schools is not so great. I'm not sure which one though. |
Negative. The cut off line is about seven blocks SOUTH of Quince Orchard High School. There is no way in hell that anyone all the way up 28 in Darnestown goes to Wootton. You are either confused about where Darnestown is or you don't know where you live. Give me a street in "Darnestown" that you think goes to Wootton. |
"Locals". = Kids to be avoided. |
1. None of the kids that go to Darnestown ES go to Wootton. Lakelands Park MS feeds into Northwest and Quince Orchard.
2. I've never heard anyone on this board have anything negative to say about Darnestown ES or Lakelands Park MS (ignore PP who apparently "knows" one of the middle schools is not good, but doesn't even know the names of them). NWHS has its pros and cons, but overall it's a good school. 3. The area is quite nice with a good community feel. DES especially is a very small school (350 students, I think). We've had a very positive experience there. I can't really compare it to any other school since it's the only one my kids have attended, but we're happy. Parents are welcomed in the building, and my kids have had great teachers every year. |
