Platonic "lip kissing" between friends and family members

What's your take?

Is it a cultural thing? My family is from Russia, and it was the norm for my family members to kiss each other on the lips, and close friends as well. However, I grew up here in the United States and it's very rare to see anyone kiss anyone on the lips besides a romantic partner. I don't know if it's because here kissing on the lips is seen as only sexual, or what? I become a bit self conscience, and tend to be more reserved in public. I fear that I'll be viewed as someone from that SNL skit. What is/is not appropriate in your eyes? My grandmother and mother still kiss all of her children on the lips, and mine as well. It's just the way it is, but I'm wary of how others receive it.

I am profoundly uncomfortable with this behavior but I was born and raised here.

Me too. I can't even stand those fake cheek kisses.

My family/close friends do it. Close friends being 5 people or so. I grew up in St. Louis and my family is German and Swedish if that helps you make any sense.

Me too. I was raised here, and it seriously makes me recoil with grossness. I understand to some people it's just how they were raised and isn't sexual to them, but to me, the intimacy of lip-to-lip is reserved for partners and lovers.

My parents always kissed their kids on the lips. When I see adults kiss in this chaste manner I think it's very sweet.

Makes me think of Angelina Jolie kissing her brother on the lips.

My German family also does this. I don't know why people get so freaked out about kissing on the lips. It's not like we're making out or something. It's just a peck.

My thoughts too, it must be an American thing? I will never get over how weird Americans are about nudity and sex, yet their culture is rich in violence and they don't even blink an eye.

Wait, what? I thought kissing family on the lips wasn't sexual? What does sex and nudity have to do with this question?

FWIW I abhor violent films, video games, and weapons. Nudity and sex don't weird me out whatsoever. But is a reason kissing is an intimate and often sexual act - there are an incredible number of nerves in the lips, congruent to other body parts.
