Last year they went farther than that for 6th grade, so don't lose hope! |
I think you stand a chance at Truth. It's a lot of people's safety school. |
It’s very likely to get an offer for Stokes in the upper grades. Also, if you are English dominant you won’t get into Oyster or Bancroft. |
What is your Middle school plan? We have considered Marie Reed but hesitate to give up our DCI feeder. |
Not sure what your IB is, but you can always add schools post-lottery. Are Cap City and EL Haynes on your list? |

Commute is a huge factor. I would put it above most others, honestly. Which makes SWW the obvious choice. People enroll in the next best school and switch if they are able. |
Commute was big for us - here in Ward 4 Banneker vs Walls lets our kid sleep in an extra half hour. |
Unfortunately much less likely this year. They are only taking about 25 6th graders (as opposed to closer to 60 the last couple years) until they get the HS out of the combined space. I think Truth shocked everyone with the number of applications received this year (and thus much higher waitlist numbers). |
+1. We're settled at a bilingual DCPS and not lotterying for DCI feeders anymore, but even with our okay to terrible lottery numbers, we would have gotten Stokes Spanish a few times in elementary. If we had gotten an offer in K we probably would have taken it, and I know a good number of families that switched from MV to Stokes. IMO, MR is a better school than Stokes by a lot, but if you're in Brookland and the commute is significant (traffic around MR is terrible), and you are interested in the DCI feed, then I would consider Stokes. |
Good luck. Since you applied to Oyster, are you already in a bilingual DCPS? my neighbor had a similar situation experience in second grade, I wondered if it is the same school. |
Why would you say MR is better? Stokes has better test scores and by significant margin in math. |
Because I work in education policy in DC, plus have first hand experience with kids from both schools and see what their ability levels are in ELA, SLA, and math in middle elementary. A well run school that has a lot of SES diversity only needs a cohort of high performing kids to provide appropriate differentiation to the kids way above the school test scores. Specifically, MR is unique in that it attracts high SES Latino and Asian families that have high expectations and are satisfied with how the school meets those expectations. Plus the DCPS curriculum is stronger than Stokes, IMO. Test scores are averages and are really of limited utility at schools like MR and some others in DC. My kids aren’t at MR, but I would have no qualms sending them there. Stokes is fine and better than some of the alternatives, but it’s one of many schools that underperform for their demographics. |
