Last year they went farther than that for 6th grade, so don't lose hope!

I think you stand a chance at Truth. It's a lot of people's safety school.

Thoughts about the following for 1st+?

-Marie Reed - Dual (English Dominant): Offered
-Stokes Spanish: #2
-Oyster: #9
-Bancroft: #8

It’s very likely to get an offer for Stokes in the upper grades. Also, if you are English dominant you won’t get into Oyster or Bancroft.

You got an offer for Marie Reed dual language? Take it. That school is awesome (have friends there who switched from another dual language program and have been thrilled, also the school has a great swimming program which is a wonderful bonus).

I’ve heard good things, but didn’t know about the swimming. That’s great. Stokes has been #1 on our list for the past four years, although I’m not sure if we could get in at 1st grade even being second on the waitlist.

My kid switched to Marie Reed DL from another DL school and we cannot say enough good things about it. So nurturing and meets kids on all levels and it’s a fantastic, cohesive parent/teacher/admin community. Academically, they brought my child up 2 grade levels after a lackadaisical pandemic/charter experience. Socially and emotionally they saw my child and knew how to give her what she needed. Plus they do a great job with the arts, field trips, etc. Congratulations!

What is your Middle school plan? We have considered Marie Reed but hesitate to give up our DCI feeder.

It really just depends on how many people leave for 6th grade (like are they IB for Deal or Hardy and prefer it? Did they get into Latin?). I think you'll be stressing until September, unfortunately.

I agree, it may happen but not soon. Last few years might have been easier because a lot of people left from ITDS for 6th grade at Latin Cooper. But that's much harder to get into now. And ITDS tends to move their list late.

What are your next best numbers?

Sojourner Truth - #52. Everything else is between 66 (Cap Hill Montessori) and 342 (Latin)

Not sure what your IB is, but you can always add schools post-lottery. Are Cap City and EL Haynes on your list?

Anonymous wrote:Honest question: we matched at Sela (we put it lower on our list but we speak the language at home, so that would actually be a bonus) and got #15 WL at SWWFS. Prior years suggests little movement off the list before August or even October, but that this result is fairly likely to get an admissions offer. SWWFS is slightly easier from a commute perspective, though not necessarily enough to make a difference, especially with the van service from our neighborhood to Sela.
A few questions for the hive mind:

--This is our first lottery. How secure is a "match" if we don't enroll until much later?

--if the WL offers go as late as October...what do people tend to do in August and September?

--most importantly - feeder status aside for a moment - is there a clear academic choice at the PK and elementary level? are there any issues with either that would give the other an advantage? Looking at the rankings and assessments (such as they are), I'm not sure ...

I love Sela, our child loves Sela, and it has been fantastic in generally every way. The only reason we are (considering) leaving is to secure a middle school feeder pattern. I would regret leaving though

Def worry about hte feeder later. They are working on it (no promises, obviously!) Sela is great! My kid is so happy there
OP here...this is great to hear - thanks! we're definitely leaning in this direction (with the same feeder concern - middle school feels VERY far away right now, so: just hoping there's movement on that by then!)

Commute is a huge factor. I would put it above most others, honestly. Which makes SWW the obvious choice. People enroll in the next best school and switch if they are able.

Commute was big for us - here in Ward 4 Banneker vs Walls lets our kid sleep in an extra half hour.

Unfortunately much less likely this year. They are only taking about 25 6th graders (as opposed to closer to 60 the last couple years) until they get the HS out of the combined space. I think Truth shocked everyone with the number of applications received this year (and thus much higher waitlist numbers).

+1. We're settled at a bilingual DCPS and not lotterying for DCI feeders anymore, but even with our okay to terrible lottery numbers, we would have gotten Stokes Spanish a few times in elementary. If we had gotten an offer in K we probably would have taken it, and I know a good number of families that switched from MV to Stokes. IMO, MR is a better school than Stokes by a lot, but if you're in Brookland and the commute is significant (traffic around MR is terrible), and you are interested in the DCI feed, then I would consider Stokes.

Oyster - #10
Eaton - #7
Hyde-Addison - #10

Eaton seems possible given past years' data but I'm guessing we'll be waiting until August...

Good luck. Since you applied to Oyster, are you already in a bilingual DCPS? my neighbor had a similar situation experience in second grade, I wondered if it is the same school.

Why would you say MR is better? Stokes has better test scores and by significant margin in math.

Because I work in education policy in DC, plus have first hand experience with kids from both schools and see what their ability levels are in ELA, SLA, and math in middle elementary. A well run school that has a lot of SES diversity only needs a cohort of high performing kids to provide appropriate differentiation to the kids way above the school test scores. Specifically, MR is unique in that it attracts high SES Latino and Asian families that have high expectations and are satisfied with how the school meets those expectations. Plus the DCPS curriculum is stronger than Stokes, IMO.

Test scores are averages and are really of limited utility at schools like MR and some others in DC. My kids aren’t at MR, but I would have no qualms sending them there. Stokes is fine and better than some of the alternatives, but it’s one of many schools that underperform for their demographics.
