How awful. The article says the man had raised the dog since a puppy and that the attacked child was known to the family and the dog. So sounds like another where a family dog just snapped and inflicted multiple serious wounds (not just a warning defensive bite). It continues to be so bizarre to me why anyone would take this risk when they are many lovely breeds that have never once tried to tear a nine year old limb from limb.

This is a myth. If you know anything about dog behavior you would see the signs that dogs are giving as a warning. But people ignore it and then the dog has no option but, to 'snap' because the subtle signs were ignored. Often times I will see Instagram where kids are bouncing or hugging the dogs and the dogs are licking their lips, turning their head, have whale eyes and try to make appeasement signs for the kid to stop. Humans sometimes punish for a growl or air snap but, then the dog learns these people won't stop until I bite.

CHILD ATTACKED:
6 year old Liam Martinez was attacked while playing in his own backyard in Wiggins, MS April 18, 2024 by a neighbor’s pit bull/black cur mixes.

“"He has a muscle that cannot be repaired. He has nerve damage. There was a lot of reconstruction that had to be done in the initial surgery," said his mother Devyn Phillips.“ The child had to be airlifted to a suitable hospital and is still in the hospital.

What is the point of this? You are not going to convince anyone but people like you.

What is the point of this? The point is that pit bulls were bred for violence. They’re still bred for violence. There is no other dog, not German Shepherds, not Cane Corso, not even the wolf-dog hybrids, for whom violence is a the dog’s job description. And there’s no other dog that can go from cuddly lap dog to murder machine with zero warning and zero history. They are dogs not fit for society.

And frankly if we’re not welcome on your “gee, ain’t pits so great?!” threads, if you don’t want facts, just back out of this one.

So where is the bar for you on this? Can you get a mutt that may or may not have some pitt in it? How about staffies? American bulldogs? boxers?

I felt like many of you until we got a pit mix rescue that we later discovered through DNA testing was full pit.

I was tempted to return the dog out of fear but there were no signs of aggression, only love.

We kept her and she is now 9, and she has only shown loyalty and sweetness.

There was no switch, no flipping, etc. She ended up being the nicest dog we have had.

I think it’s based on the individual dog and upbringing, not the breed as a whole.

PS If you are wondering how we couldn’t tell it was full pit, she is black and did look a lot like a black lab of which they said she was 1/2

So far. May the odds be ever in your favor, but in this case, the odds literally are not.

The dog is 9! They only live til like 10-11, if it’s going to snap it’s usually before 2.

And if something happens, I’m sure this will give you loads of comfort and will allay all guilt.

A pit bull owner sicced her pit bull on Rocky Brooks. The dog bit the man’s limbs but locked onto his face. Emergency surgery was required to put his face back together and he was put in an induced coma.

It’s not a myth. I agree most dogs give lots of warning signs. For whatever reason some pits do not and attack without provocation. I watched a ring camera video of a little girl riding her scooter down the street while her babysitter walked her little dog. A pit jumped a fence from a house across the street, streaked across the road, killed the little dog and then turned on the child. The owner was interviewed and he was in a daze and felt awful — dog had not previous bitten and just snapped, apparently triggered by a child and little dog who was not even on the same side of the street of his house.

Clearly not all pit bulls are crazy and dangerous. The majority of them are not. The point is that they are many times more likely to engage in this dangerous behavior. Sounds like you got lucky, which is great. I don’t think your one sole experience is grounds for you to absolve the breed of the issues that are apparent and have been shown by the data.

Well maybe children shouldn’t be riding scooters and little dogs should be kept indoors so as to not provoke these innocent pit bulls. And it is more likely that a chihuahua would be the type of dog to bite so now are you saying you want to ban those dogs? #blamethedeednotthebrees

/s (but this sounds like something a pibble apologist would write)

A 52 year old woman walking along the street in Southwest Philadelphia was attacked by three pit bulls on a walk with their 21 year old owner after they “somehow” got loose and started attacking her.
