Sources please. This is false. Maybe true for Duke, not for UVA, a state school. 93.4% of UVA's class is in the top 10% of their graduating classes, have ACTs 331-34 and GPA of 4.26 or better. And how that equates to wealth? ACtually, UVA's incoming class of 2021 had the largest number of financially challenged students ever, and the largest number of minorities ever. Remember UVA shies away from taking students from the northern part of the state. Most of Virginia is quite poor. I have a student there. He doesn't have a car and probably never will on his parent's dime. He lives in a dorm of four. He has URM classmates. He struggles to get by financially. He doesn't do the greek scene. He's fiscally responsible and he adores UVA. He doesn't know a single "rich kid" student. Please don't post if you don't know what you are talking about. |

I think the wealth disparity is more evident at UVA than other major state flagships like UMich and Cal. That is not to say that those schools have wealth disparities. There is a southern planter-y air at UVA which contrasts o the feel of Michigan, Cal and UCLA.
All that said, can Michigan leverage UMich to jump start its economy? |

I meant to say that those schools have wealth disparities, but it does not play out like UVA. I grew up in NE. A lot of prep school kids went there whereas the others had more socio-economic diversity. |

UVA as a state flagship cannot by definition be inundated with wealthy kids. Admission is strictly merit, as you know, with the very rare exception of a mommy or daddy who gives $1M. You must have the test scores to get in and a string of impressive accomplishments. Here is President Teresa Sullivan's remarks at convocation for the class of 2021. Thirty eight percent of the students are participating in the University’s AccessUVA financial-aid program and 570 are the first in their families to go to college. Please don't comment when you don't know anything about the school.

This entry gets today's award for least-self-observant poster. "Twenty or thirty years ago mummy and daddy had so much money that I got to attend Phillips Exeter (which is now $61K a year). Some of those prep school students went to UVA. Ergo, UVA is for the wealthy". Unbelievable. Ever think that maybe those kids were on scholarship? or had the scores to attend? |

Emory didn't seem to be lacking funding to me, when we visited last year. It has a $6.5 billion endowment, not the size of Princeton's or Harvard's but definitely one of the larger endowments in the country. |
