Where do you draw the line with deli meat and listeria risk?

I ate Subway sandwhiches during my pregnancy with DD and had no complications. Just ask them to toast the sandwhich. I'm more scared of getting the tuna or egg salad sandwhiches because they have mayo and just sit there for you don't know how long.

I am not going to comment on whether or not this is a trip to CrazyTown or not but this is from the website: American Pregnancy.org

"The CDC has recommended that pregnant women avoid soft cheeses such as FETA, Brie, Camembert, blue-veined cheesesl and Mexican style cheeses such as queso fresco, queso blanco and panela. "

So, Feta cheese whether or not it is pasturized is not recommended by the CDC.

I think it is tough for pregnant women getting inundated with "avoid this food" "you could harm your baby if you eat this food" that it can cause frustration because God Forbid none of us want to cause any harm to our unborn baby.

i used to love italian hoagies...with salami, pepperoni and soppresata, but now I just get them with provolone and swiss...everything else pickles, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, etc.

surprisingly just as satisfying and you get a little protein from the cheese, right?

My OB just told me to heat my sandwiches, which I only sometimes do.

I think the op is having trouble finding options while at work. I'm in the same boat. Heating a sandwich isn't really an option, particularly if you haven't told anyone about pregnancy yet.

You lost me - why is heating a sandwich not an option? You put it in the office microwave and if someone asks (which they won't), you say, "I prefer hot sandwiches."

I can only assume you don't work in an office, so I'll explain...

I would rather not "steam" my entire sandwich (lettuce, tomato, mayo...) and it doesn't solve the listeria problem to go back to the office and only take out the meat to reheat because it would have already contaminated the entire sandwich.

More importantly, not everyone eats lunch IN the office. Which is why this is not always an option. I've been going to lunch with the same people long enough that when we go to Potbelly's, together, they know I don't prefer hot sandwiches, and some of them are women ttc. I was simply pointing out that the post with the seemingly simple solution of zapping lunch meat might not be appropriate for all lunch situations.

What an odd thing to go on the attack about. Yes, I've worked in offices for many years. I've never had lengthy conversations about my lunch choices with my co-workers. Just seems like this thread is increasingly devoted to making things more difficult than they need to be. But please, carry on.

CDC just says not to eat unpasteurized feta...

"Do not eat soft cheeses such as feta, brie, and queso fresco unless they have labels that say they are pasteurized."

So don't worry about picking it off - enjoy.

FYI: I just got lunch at Devon & Blakely (love them!). They said they normally toast their sandwiches for 30 seconds, so I asked them to toast my Cuban for 1 minute. They call it "toasted twice." It came out steaming! But not over-toasted. Yummy in my tummy!!

Toasting doesn't kill anything.

It does if it comes out steaming. D & B uses enclosed toaster ovens, not the conveyor belt like the other sandwich shops. Even when you microwave, the standard is to heat until steaming, which is usually a minute.

I can't imagine having coworkers pay so much attention to my meal preferences that they notice whether I toast my sandwich and infer that I'm pregnant from that. I'm sure it's possible, I just have worked in several different offices and none of my coworkers would have ever noticed such a thing. It could be that it's just on your own mind a lot, but not so much on everyone else's.
