Sandbox Sand

All the wackos concerned about sand better never go to the beach. Beach sand contains silica, black mica, and garnets.

Our kids play and roll around in the sand at the beach, play in dirt, etc. I think there is a level of paranoia out there that I do not want to reach.

FYI - for a sand table you can also turn it into a sensory table. Fill it with rice, dried beans, etc. We do that occasionally. If you get magnetic wands you can fill it with magnetic items (great fine motor activity).

the EPA has documented that some commercial sand is dangerous, I dont think this includes sand on the beach.

The problem is only with commercial processed sand.

YES b/c the EPA is full of wackos with random, bogus warnings to freak people out. GAWD! I suppose you think warnings that cigarettes cause cancer are wacko too.

Ok. the science is based on what? if someone out there is a believer in a system of investigation that relies on certain principles, then I invite that person to use his/her science to study manufactured play sand, identifying the ppm, wetness, usability in so far as castle-making ability, etc. and document their own children playing it in and the results thereof. Instead of admonishing people for trying to do right by their kids, provide us with helpful and much needed research. There is no research done on the long-term effects of manufactured, crystalline silica play sand on the health of young, developing bodies. What we do know is that the smaller the particles of crystalline silica inhaled over a long period of time are most definitely harmful to adults. The rub is ALWAYS that we do not know how this information is compounded in growing, developing cells of young children.
You believe in science, then please do the science. I believe in my heart that when someone is motivated by profit, the health and well-being of anyone and everyone is either minimized or dismissed. Ask anyone fighting cancer if they agree. Ask anyone whose child is fighting cancer. It's real. It's not internet hype that is motivating these urban moms; its our education that taught us to question authority and dig deeper coupled with our natural instincts to protect our children. PPM and developing bodies. That is what it is all about.
