Liberal Arts v. Non-Liberal Arts (Universities) - which is it? We are struggling!

Painting with too broad a brush here -- which LACs are you talking about? There's a huge range (as there is with public universities as well.) Which majors? English or econ? Which English majors? What did they do during the summers? Do they have IT-related skills? My son graduated from a top-ranked LAC with a math/econ major and had several job offers early in senior year. His freshman roommate majored in English, hit the pavement right after graduation and just landed a job in website design, but he had a strong resume with internships in the field.

Again, the premise here is murky -- there are English majors at large public universities too. Are we contrasting majoring in the humanities or social sciences v. majoring in engineering? Or are we contrasting LACs with large public universities?
