I'm 41 and my wife is 35 and we don't have much anymore. main house is worth about $920K with a $700K mortgage, two investment houses are worth maybe $650K total with mortgages around $450K (and tenants who provide just a little positive cash flow). I have about $275K in savings. She might have $20K, but she owns her own business that hopefully will prove very profitable in time. Right now, not so much. HHI is probably about $250K. No student loans and no car loans, but about $10K in credit card debt.

Net worth $1.2 million. HHI ~$463K. 38 and 40. No inheritance...all our own $.

husband invests just about everything we make...always has....we have old, reliable cars (though usu. walk everywhere) and are not flashy. We have 2 modest homes in good urban zipcodes.

My stroller is often made fun of on this forum.

Net worth does get complicated. I include about $350,000 of college savings in our net worth, but we start paying for college this year and 8 years from now that amount will be pretty much gone. Presumably we will be able to save quite a bit during the next 8 years since we won't have private school tuition anymore but our net worth has the potential to drop as we burn through this money.

I tend to look at 4 categories: liquid assets (like cash or mutual funds that we can use anytime), college savings, retirement accounts, and real estate. The only debt we have is mortgage debt and I look at the net of market value of our houses (less 8% to cover commissions, taxes, etc) and loans. I do a separate section looking at what the kids would have if something happened to us so I include life insurance and survivor benefits in that.

Our net worth is in the $3.5 million range (including the college savings).

HHI is 230-240K. Net worth is negative due to student loans, and only about 40K in equity in our condo. We are 29 & 30, and I think are frugal (one old car, small inexpensive condo, no vacations). I think it is crazy that we are in the same tax bracket as people who have millions in assets.

$140k income, negative net worth (about 250k negative, depending on how retirement accounts are looking these days; our house dropped 30% of its value and we're now underwater).

We're 36 and 40.

And, our net worth may actually not be as negative as that because my husband's mother has his name and our son's name on number of her investments, but we consider that all her money and really have no idea of the amounts of her savings. We expect her to live 10-20 more years and have no intention of touching her money in her lifetime.

HHI 230K, net worth around 570K (split something like 100K liquid assets, 290K retirement, 180K house equity, and 20K 529). No loans or debt except the mortgage.

We're close to this. Late 30s/early 40s, HHI of about $300k, net worth of about $850k - roughly $100k in equity (taking into account mortgage and 10% transaction costs), $550k in returement accounts, and $150k liquid savings. No other debt.

Late 40's. Net worth around 2 million, factoring balance on mortgage, which is our only debt. No family money. I'm a maniac about saving for college (2 kids) and retirement.
