Is this normal for travel tryouts.

We had an odd tryout over a 3 week period where my son started on the top field with that club's current top team. Over 3 tryouts he was not moved off that field once, but was also never approached by a coach either. We don't have a offer for any of their teams, but yet not rejected either. LOL

The top field is typically the set roster. Most of the movement down from that field is a baseline making player or group, and most of the movement up from lower fields is a positive sign about your kid and how they performed at the eval. That said, there are only so many roster spots, and typically on any given team, only the bottom 25% or so is at risk any given year, so for a 17/18 person roster, you’re really only competing for maybe 3-4 spots, not accounting for positions in the pool mix.

Also, many clubs don’t reject, they only accept. So if you were not explicitly offered a spot, your player was rejected.

I would also say on some websites you will see that current players are guaranteed a spot meaning for external you need to be really good to hit a top team as a lower team may not get an offer if there isn’t space. I know of multiple clubs that guarantee space for kids already in the program

If your son has interest in this team, reach out to the coach. There may be an opening after someone other player doesn't accept an offer. You showing initiative that your son wants to play there could give the coach the incentive to choose your son over other boys at the same ability level.

If your son is OK playing on the 2nd team at this club and if the coach doesn't have a spot on the 1st team, ask about the 2nd one.

Its normal for kids they don't know to go on one field at the outset. Then coaches send them to other fields fairly quickly based on ability. Usually they have a strong coach watching that field to make the right decisions, so the first field is not an issue. Its where they wind up as the day goes on.

We had this happen at Loudoun when my son was younger. Spent all three tryouts on their top field, knew all the players and they him, fit right in. Not a peep from them. Not even a reply to two emails asking for feedback. I think it is not uncommon there. It was definitely not impressive. I assumed he would at least get a second team offer, but nothing came. This was at U12.

Weird, he flew under the radar.... perhaps the coach assumed he was already part of that group and didn't evaluate any of the top team players as they were already a lock for the club. The evaluator sometimes doesn't know all the kids. Defiantly reach out!

We tried out for U12 Loudoun last year. There were about six fields full of kids. It took me a minute to figure out where the A, B, C, D fields were. They were just holding a practice. The last field was where they put all the kids that were new to Loudoun with a disinterested coach playing on his phone while they kids kicked the ball around. The second-to-last field is where their challenge players were trying out.

This year, I have noticed less kids for U13, but still the same format. I did notice more coaches watching the last two fields, and some kids get pulled up from the sixth field to participate with the challenge kids. We'll see how day two goes.
