How much do spend on annual vacations?

Flying is expensive… we are planning a trip out west this summer with mostly camping for lodging, and it will still likely be between $4,000 and $5,000 for four of us including flights, car rental, hotel lodging, gas, food, etc.
On the other hand, we did a 5-day road trip up to Canada recently and spent less than $1,400 total for 4 people including everything.

I think your price sounds reasonable for flying overseas & 2 weeks of lodging etc.

We make several million per year and are UHNW. Our family of 5 usually spends $20-25k for a week in the caribbean. For better locales it goes up from there.

What do you do that you make several million a year, whereas there are others making as little as $12 an hour?

I just booked next years spring break trip to Paris. Free flights (well $600 in taxes) using points and AF bonus point redemption. There are ways to save on flights if you play the game. I do some since thats how we afford it.

We spend between $20-$25K on travel each year. If we do a 2-week international trip, that's our big trip for the year and would take 1/2 to 2/3 of that budget.

I think we are kind of quantity over quality when it comes to travel...also we try to tack onto work trips, etc. our HHI is c.330k.

calendar year 2023-2024 is especially high in travel.

Jan: bday weekend in NYC (mom/daughter): c. 1200
spring break/april: central europe, it was a combo work trip/family trip. cost about 4500 (used miles, work ticket, some lodging points, etc)
July: considering anniversary trip for me and DH (maybe costa rica? c. 2500 for a week,)
August: week at the beach/family: 3k [rental share is 2k, plus another c. 1k for meals and activities...]
September: labor day weekend/celebrate my dad's bday in california. 1600 [1200 for tickets, 400 for activities. dad covers lodging.]
November: only if we dont do july trip, DH will come to London or Paris for a few days with me before my work event; costs would be his flight and about 4-5 days lodging, meals. c. 2500.
December: family trip to california: 1600 for tickets, another 1500 for activities, meals, and car rental. staying with family.

so, about 16-17k this year. Which is quite a lot but we have a couple big bdays and anniversaries--and its not a lot for 6 trips.

in addition I will go to China, Paris, NYC, and LA/SF for work this year....I try to rack up as many points as possible on my chase card....

No PP, but are you trying to guilt PP? I have family members that make $12-20/hour. DH has made a million a yea, but typically in the 600-800k range. There are a million variables to this.

There is nothing wrong with making a lot of money. And you would be surprised, especially in this area how many people make over seven figures.

I own businesses. I took the profits from those businesses and invested them. I took those profits and invested them. A few decades later the money comes in at incredible speed.

We go on at least one two week international trip a year (summer) - Spring Break is 50/50 international vs domestic. Last few years have stayed close to home over winter break but before the pandemic we either went skiing for a week or went to Hawaii.

About 3 international trips a year

Summer . We go back to our home country in Southeast Asia or about two weeks. We flew business class so $18k for two adults and one kid just for flight. We stayed with our family so food and accommodations are minimal.

Between thanks giving and Christmas…. One week cruise or hotel in Caribbean about 8k

Spring break 1 week somewhat warm in South America 5- 8k ( other times we did west coasts trips for a week )

We do small trips one the weekends to Chicago or Toronto a couple times a year for a night or two.

So total about 40k to 50 k a year for family of 3.

Two-three international trips per year. Not many domestic trips (except for the trips during the pandemic and extended weekend driving distance trips)

The cost depends on where we go and the length of the trip. Asia costs more than Europe or South America. We typically spend 4-12 days in a country depending on the destination. Overall, the cost is 35-50k per year for a family of four (two adults and two teens).

Sounds very cheap for that many people and for that long

We live in CA now and do most of our travel to visit family on the East coast (so no lodging costs; every other year) or by car near us, or shorter flights. Even so it’s a lot of money!

This year:
Dec: flights to East coast for family of four and rental car: about $3.5k

Spring break: 2 night local vacation about $700

July: a week at an all inclusive within driving distance: $6,000 including all meals

August: traveling to my sister’s town in the West: (me and kids without DH): flights, rental car, condo: about $4k (not including meals)

November: plan to go to San Diego. Prob $4k in travel costs, not including things like zoo passes or meals.

Next year we won’t travel East, but we’re talking about doing Hawaii for spring break.

Family of 3 - in normal years about $10,000 (including the cost of boarding our two dogs) for a week at the beach in Florida for spring break and a week at a lake in the summer. Those costs are for staying in VRBOs in good locations, but not spending a lot on eating out. Every few years, we will do a bigger trip for one of those vacations, so cost will be higher by a few thousand.

Not sure how this will change as my kids are getting older - e.g., older kid is doing a school trip over spring break next year, which throws off our spring break plans, and we'll need to start planning for college visits.

I am PP who said 35-50k above. You are right. I should add that for Asia trip, we used miles, which reduced the cost about $7-8k for a family of four.

This summer we are spending about 25k for Europe, mostly England. But we are flying first class on BA so the cost is high. And staying in a really nice apartment. Last time at this cost for the 3 of us.

Normally we are at about 12k for the year.
