You should take a look at Vienna (VYS). Look at the tryout schedule. I think you’ll find that some of the fields are similar distances as McLean fields for you.

Unless you are at Oak Mont or Oakton....those can be a beast to get to from McLean.

Ken Lawerence, oakmont, nottaway are all decent locations and I think you’ll see it’s no worse than many fields that McLean uses. It’s the reason so many of the lower level teams from McLean jump to VYS. If you’re not able to handle a Vienna commute from McLean than you may just have to accept the lower team your kid get and McLean because no other team is closer than Vienna.

During yesterday's tryouts I was confused watching the groupings. I finally asked another parent and they said the groups are based on current teams. I noticed my daughter was not in the second level team group but with the third level team and rec players. Do the coaches move kids up into other groupings on the second day of tryouts? How does a kid try out for a certain team? Do they need to ask? Do I? Any assistance is appreciated. My daughter was frustrated all evening wondering why she was playing in scrimmages with rec players (she asked them which team they were on).

Anyone know how McLean Youth Soccer conducts their tryouts?

How did they have the groupings? Were the top players at the end and bottom players at the other end?

They put the current top team on one field, the current next team on another field, and then the lower travel team and random kids on another field

Can anyone comment on offers received, by age group/team level? It might be helpful to know age, gender, team level that are in progress.

2013G team has had a lot of success this season. Hard to imagine anyone new breaking into that roster unless the club plans to increase roster size for next season.

2013GG is a great team and I believe highly ranked nationally. Even in the DMV, it’s a bit of an anomaly and not really illustrative of the usual tryout process.

I would say -

The coaches are looking to add new players. They want to improve on the bottom third day of each team. They know the level of the current players. If a new player at tryouts looks like they could be better they will take a chance. Why? Again - they know the bottom players aren’t getting much better. The grass might be greener with a new player.

2013 Girls Green is top ranked in the nation. They have 15 players on their roster. But, DB is leaving for Loudoun so unsure how that impacts things even though CW stepped in. There were a lot of top players from other clubs trying out for green this week.

Will they play 11v11 or 9v9 next season? That presumably would affect roster size. 15 already is a lot for 9v9 and I doubt they will replace existing players when the team already is very strong and has great chemistry.

2013 is going to be U12 which is still 9v9. McLean is notorious for having big teams and having kids ride the bench the whole season. It's good for their program but bad for the individuals. You want player development (which you should at this age) find another team. You want a team that dominates while your kid plays for 5-10 minutes per game (if they're lucky) then by all means go to McLean and give them your time and money.

Most top U12 teams play up (11v11) in the spring and a few play up in the fall too. McLean U12 doesn’t do that?

Is anyone else surprised to see McLean announce a 3rd tryout for U9? Is it really they had “too many kids” come out and want to give everyone a chance to be seen?

The coaches seemed focused on the green team on day 2. Green offers went out last night. The Monday try out will be for the remaining teams.
