They know what's going on in their schools.
And many are asking:

[‘Why is nothing being done?’: Concerns grow about drug use, fighting in Montgomery Co. school bathrooms]
Kate Ryan | kryan wtop com April 18, 2024

"For many students in Montgomery County public schools, the bathrooms remain a no-go zone due to drug use and fighting.

That’s according to testimony at the most recent Board of Education meeting on April 11.

During the public comment segment of the meeting, David Gebler, an English teacher at Kennedy High School in Silver Spring, Maryland, told board members that often, “the halls reek of marijuana.”

“Usually, drug use occurs in our bathrooms,” Gebler said. “But vaping directly in the hall is becoming popular.”

“Last school year, we had vape detection sensors active in our bathrooms to detect drug use. They were removed over the summer without the knowledge of our new and incoming administration,” Gebler told the board, adding that there are also reports of unknown persons entering school grounds to engage in drug trade.

Gebler insisted that the issues he mentioned were not unique to Kennedy High School.

Montgomery County student member of the board Sami Saeed appeared clearly frustrated as he told the members of the board he knew exactly what students are saying.

“The fights are getting out of hand, the bathrooms are not being monitored,” Saeed said.

Saeed, who authored a resolution on school safety and security that was approved by the board in November, said he just recently asked students to give him feedback on school safety.

“The number one thing they said was literally ‘why is nothing being done?’ That’s what they told me,” Saeed explained to the board.

Acting chief safety officer Adaeze Ezeofor-Andrews told Saeed that she “wholeheartedly” agreed that the school system needs to move faster on updating security improvements, but that it would require collaboration.

“We have our work cut out for us,” Ezeofor-Andrews said. “Our shop can’t do it alone.”

In an April 2 letter to the MCPS community, interim superintendent Monique Felder said that adding security cameras, weapons and vape detectors are under consideration “for the future.” She added that there is continuous monitoring of school grounds, and urged parents with concerns to contact their principals.

“These things should have been addressed six months ago, while we’re saying it’s going to be next year,” Saeed said."

Wow this tread turns really disgusting. It reminds me of the hatred from anonymous corwards Hana had to suffer when she spoke up about masking at schools..

Based on what we've been seeing the past year with the BOE and the whole of MCPS, I think the SMOB is more aware of what's going on in schools than the adults.

Oh the adults know. They just CHOOSE to ignore or ACT like it's not a big deal.

This thread is supposed to be a positive one about the SMOBs. Go to another thread to discuss issues in the schools.

Thoughtful is useless. They have no real life experiences, have no understanding of finances or taxes. Yet, the have the powers to vote on decisions affecting the education and future of our kids.

Last time I checked, real life experiences begin long before one turns 18.

Oh please, they know nothing about finances, taxes, property taxes, education, ADHD, special needs, or the legal aspects to anything. They really don’t know everything the is involved in education. They are hiring a company to find a new school superintendent.

They know YouTube and TikTok really well. And Snapchat and the Gram. Those are their life experiences. You are really ignorant and stupid. And a voter. We should all be scared of idiots like you.

The SMOBs are far more aware of finances, taxes, property taxes, education, ADHD, special needs, and the legal aspects of stuff than the average voter in MoCo.

Clarksburg High School junior Praneel Suvarna was elected as the next Student Member of the Board of Education (SMOB) after more than 58,927 Montgomery County Public Schools middle and high school students cast ballots on Wednesday.

Suvarna ran against Montgomery Blair High School junior Sam Ross. Suvarna received 53% of the vote and Ross received 47%, according to an MCPS press release.

The SMOB is a voting member of the district’s Board of Education. Montgomery County is one of two counties in the state to give its SMOB full voting rights on the school board. The position is unpaid but does receive a $5,000 college scholarship, student service learning hours and one honors-level social studies credit, according to the MCPS website.

Congratulations to Praneel! Surprised no one posted about this yet since the news broke yesterday.

To clarify, the current SMOB, Sami Saeed, will still be active in his role until June 30. So Praneel will be SMOB elect for a few months until his term starts in July.

One thing I do like about MCPS is that we have student member of the board who has full voting rights.

And never does anything. $10K easy money

Exactly! And based on past SMOB’s they get a golden ticket to an IVY league college.

Or could it be that past SMOBs were highly qualified to get into an ivy and this position is just another thing to include on their application?

+1 And plenty of SMOBs including the current have engaged the students to be sure that their voices are heard as part of the debate of this at the board table. And the current SMOB has been vocal about school safety including the recent BOE meeting. Not to mention is attentive at meetings.

I can't remember the young lady's name, but the SMOB during the pandemic year was far more proactive and communicative than the rest of the board and central office combined. She listened to students and parents, she disseminated summaries of discussions, and tried to make sure both sides had the relevant information. She was amazing.

That was Hana O'Looney

I found her to be smug and insufferable. She’s probably doing great at Harvard!

Many of you are vastly overstating the knowledge and wisdom that comes from being an adult. The MCPS high school students I've encountered are more intelligent and kinder than most adults.

This is an insane take.

Close this thread, already. Can't believe people bashing the students. Congrats to those who won and to those who are involved in making their schools and communities better. Sam Ross who did not win against Suvarna was already involved in current SMOB's efforts. Way to go Ms.Ross!

Clearly you don't work with student leaders!
