I’d like to know this also.

Maybe with a weapon?

However, it might have been better to relocate next to the driver and ride to the terminal stop, or text a friend and ask them to meet her. Basically, you have to help teens come up with back-up plans for bad things, because none of us make perfect decisions in the middle of a crisis.

This is the most important take away. We need to tell our kids how to act in situations that may arise.

No, then he would have been charged with first degree rape.

Predators are crafty. Maybe he offered to buy her something at some store that was located on the other side of the wooded area via a shortcut.

I was contemplating letting my current 6th grader ride metro bus next year. She’s in private but it stops outside her school and a block from our house.
I’ve been going thru scenarios in my head and one of them was to tell her to get off the bus if someone on the bus makes her uncomfortable. This is now making me realize I need to rethink that. She’ll have a phone and the ride is less than 10 mins.

Reminder to parents to tell their kids not to talk to strangers, certainly don't go anywhere with them.

Your minor child should sit and the front of the bus, and report any mistreatment to the bus driver when the bus stops, and then call you or call 911 if an adult is harassing them and won't stop.

Staying on the bus is safer than getting off the bus at a random stop.

You can stay on a call with your kid for the entirety of their bus ride.

No reason for that. It’s a shame we don’t use the death penalty in maryland

Hah, remember that groups like BLM and the Silver Spring Justice Coalition have been calling for lighter sentences and lowering of maximum sentences because it ruins the lives of the offenders to spend so much of their life in prison.

I absolutely don't agree with that, but keep this in mind for example when you vote for County Council members. Some are very opposed to steps to get tough on crime (Jawando and Mink in particular).

I advocate for no sentence durations. Every sentence should end in one of these outcomes:

1. Rehabilitation
2. Isolation from causing further harm
3. Death

Rehabilitation is the primary goal and requires setting criteria for measuring it. So a person cannot be rehabilitated without showing remorse and regret for criminal actions taken. They must also show a plan to ensure they can function in society without repeat or new offense.

Failure to achieve rehabilitation results in continued isolation from causing further harm or eventual death

As an aside, I wish they wouldn’t say that this man ‘sexually assaulted them’. People need to know that this was a young female that was assaulted.

Likely that he had also tried to lure other young females.

In this case, it feels important to distinguish versus trying to leave it ambiguous as ‘them’.

Yeah, sorry. I’m on board with this.

He doesn’t deserve any more chances to become a ‘returning citizen’.

Police are reaching out to the public because they think there are likely other victims.

My DD goes to RM, which is close to there, and there are tons of students who take the bus up and down Veirs Mill and Rockville Pike both to and from school. Talk to your kids, especially your daughters.

Glad they caught him, but this definitely makes me a bit wary about DD taking the bus, even during the day.

And the dcum moms beat up and disparage the parents who don’t let their kids ride piblic transport alone. They will stay quiet on this thread and shrink.

+1 It’s irresponsible of those pushing the free range agenda. This is not a homogenous society like Japan or Israel where there is more safety. I’m not saying helicoptering is the solution either, but something in between.

Exactly.

I do let my DS ride the bus during the day, but am not comfortable with DD doing it.

This poor girl was on the bus at 4:30pm on a weekday. She should have been fine.

And sure, she could move to the front of the bus. But honestly, that takes a LOT of courage and self-assertiveness. Something that many 17yo girls might not have developed.
