Not at SH but know multiple families who are. They reported a tough return from Covid but that things have improved over the past couple of years. |
Right, I assume if you lottery for a school and match, you would go bc you lotteried there. Our family didn't lottery, and others we know didn't lottery so we ended up at our feeder DCPS middle school. And I am not naive and know that some of the other families at their IB MS did try lottery but didn't get in, but I always assumed if somebody tried lottery and matched, the odds are they'd go wherever they felt was the right fit that they tried lotterying for. |
I know multiple LT students who lotteried into BASIS and turned it down over the last few years, including 1 who is doing so this year and 1 still deciding. Latin? No. But BASIS? Definitely folks lottery, match and then decide it's not for them. One kid came back mid-year two years ago and she is now a happy 7th grader at SH. |
Stuart Hobson does have an aftercare provider called Afterschool All Stars, FYI. I'm not sure about the other two schools. |
EH does not have an official aftercare provider, but my child and most of their peers have things in afternoon -just depends on if they sign up. Sports, debate, school play, probably others I am forgetting about. Also this program is at the school, we did not do it because my child plays sports and would have missed too many days but have heard good things from some families who have https://higherachievement.org/ |
It’s not “bashing” to point out that most kids are below grade level. 84% of the kids are below grade level in math. Sorry if that hurts your feelings. |
I know families at Maury that tried out the lottery, matched at Basis or Latin, and are undecided. I also know families that did not lottery because they are planning to go to E-H. I think test scores are of limited value because the school is changing and even two year old results may be outdated. More relevant to many, I think, is admission to selective HSs. The last year that is posted doesn't show much for E-H in that regard. But, I hear this has been a solid year for admissions. |
I’ve worked at Stuart-Hobson for several years. Our team of sixth-grade teachers brings plenty of experience and energy to the table, and kids in that grade level are having a positive, productive year overall. Same goes for students in the other grade levels.
We‘re also sending more than a third of our eighth graders to Walls, Banneker, Ellington, and McKinley Tech, for what that’s worth. |
I do. |
I know two of these schools well. Pick SH and don’t look back. |
+1 |
Maybe, if you're white, AA or Latino. If you're Asian, like us, think twice. To my knowledge, there are only two or three Asian or half-Asian students at SH. |
One assumes this is because kids in the feeder who were slotted have enrolled at BASIS, Latin etc. and SH now has line of sight into rising 6th graders from feeders. |
If that. |
Strange comment. The data is public. Your anecdotal "knowledge" is neither relevant nor necessary. The reported Asian % at SH is <1%. There are very few Asians there. Your comment implies that somehow that there are more Asian kids at the other middle schools in question. There are not. All 3 have reported Asian percentages <1%. OP asked about 3 schools. None of which has a measurable Asian population. |
