+1. It would also help if you had another plan for where to make non recommend reductions.

I hate comments like this. Passive aggressive move to shut down any push back. It is not the job of parents to figure out the minutiae of the budget. And no one would listen to them any way. The school district should be more open and transparent on where $$$ go. They should not have planned a move to Woodward when the school is only 70% completed. They should have delayed the move one more year. And why is the construction moving at a snail’s pace any way?

It kind of is their job to figure out the minutiae of the budget if they're going to engage in advocacy to the board in favor of them making a budgeting decision they're advocating for. Sorry, but that's how it works.

+1. You have questions or concerns that is all well and fine. The BOE and Facilities department have email address and phone numbers that you can reach out to. The BOE has a meeting you can come to. MCPS presented its options for Non recommended Reductions. If you don’t agree with those choices, it’s on you to present why and then present another solution.

Nope. Highly paid administrators can work out solutions. That is what we pay them for.

This. The pp who always claims parents have to come up with the correct solution is nuts. First of all, you could spend all your time finding the most effective solution and it would most likely be rejected by MCPS Central just because. Are they going to include parents as equal partners in their work meetings? I don’t think so.
Also, stop asking parents to do the jobs of senior administrators at MCPS who are paid very well. It is on them for screwing up the high school experience of a large number of Northwood students. And for refusing to share pertinent information earlier. It is practically too late to change course now but if they had openly and honestly shared the full implications of the move last semester, parents, staff and students would have had time to react and advocate for themselves

What changed between last semester and this semester other than the auditorium moving to a phase 3?

There is no solution that does not involve shortchanging some other group of parents and stakeholders. If they put the auditoriums back into the CIP, they have to remove another project and that’s going to piss off another group of parents.

If you want to engage in advocacy here, you have to argue why your preferred project should get prioritized the others in the budget. But you don’t want to do that because then your hands wouldn’t be clean and you’d have to acknowledge that you’re lobbying against the interests of another set of parents.

Does anyone actually believe that the new Northwood HS will be ready in 3 years.
No way is that going to happen. I bet Northwood students will be at Woodward for 4 years.

It could happen. And they'll still not have an auditorium if MCPS doesn't get a little more funding.

I see no reason why it should take longer than 3 years. High schools are typically done within 2 years, so it is already extended by 150%.

This is untrue. Firstly, not having an auditorium for all 3 years is terrible.
Auditoriums are used all the time at schools for theater, dance performances, assemblies, AP exams, testing, talent show, etc.

Sports fields will not be ready either.
This will affect not only all outdoor athletics but PE as well. Only one indoor gym space will be available to Northwood students and no completed outdoor space.

There will be no student parking available as only staff parking spaces will be completed when Northwood arrives.

Longer commuting time means some kids will be picked up as early as 6 am and will be dumped at school 45 minutes before the start of school.
MCPS also wants the school day to end earlier for Northwood as they need the buses to get to their next shift on time.

There are other issues as well.

MCPS was not honest with the community about Woodward being completed and now it is too late for students to try to switch to other schools. MCPS should have delayed the move by one more year if the school is not ready to accept students

Students can take the bus.

Before supply chain issues, maybe.

DP -- for an extra hour and a half each day. Or something like that, no?

And doesn't this mean that the faculty who need to be supporting those activities also have to spend more time of their day doing the same? Is there a program in place to compensate them for this from MCPS general funds instead of that allocated to the school (or to boost the school allocation, accordingly)? Or are Northwood students going to lose out on this, too, because staff won't be as available?

There is no other good alternative. Families who don't like it can lottery into other schools.

MCPS is not willing to cut out the wasteful spending to allow for these things to happen. This is why many DCC families don't want their kids at Woodward when it opens.

Doubt it. County goes with who ever is "friends" as the contractors so its probably contractor issue. Most things are easily available and if not, change the plans to get what you need.

Just rank Northwood as your fifth choice. That's what we did.

Just to be clear, DCC families (or MCPS families as a whole) may not want to be at a school when it is missing essential facilities, Northwood (at Woodward) or otherwise.

But aren’t all the details being provided too late for Northwood families to jump ship? Students are already committed for next year
