My k-8 bombed

This is 100% expectations management—getting families to want what is attainable. Or persuading them what they got was what they wanted all along.

If you are a younger parent there is a huge amount of rosy PR to keep you there though 8th. It can be a shocker when you get there.

It’s called being realistic. No school is going to get your kid into their #1 choice if they are aiming above their capabilities.

People discuss their plans long before admissions decisions are handed out. And if the parents aren’t opening to discussing it, the inquiring party says, “Hey, Larla, ask Larlo where he’s going for grade x/next year”.

My kid called a couple of her best friends, but she (and I) have no idea how the entire class did. I wouldn't dream of asking a parent this the day after accepts come out.

Several others are headed to public or Catholic and one to boarding. Once again zero admits to GDS despite the majority of the class applying. Overall, OK, but not great (BTW, some overlap in stats above, but surprisingly less than you'd think).

How do you know this is bombing and not due to parental choice? Are people complaining about big3 outcomes again?

the only big 3 school people really want is GDS and few are getting in

Sadly true.

Almost as well as Blue Sidewalk of Herndon did.

Go K-12 if you have the option and you think your child would be happy there all the way through. Admissions process is a pain to go through again.

Once more, in English.

DC was accepted at their first choice HS. So we are still happy with our k-8 decision. From what we have heard from other parents, DC’s peers also are generally happy with their offers. Results like vary considerably by k-8 school.

Our k-8 got 50% acceptance to Sidwell.

I don't believe this unless your K-8 has two people in the eighth grade. There are 30 or so slots for 9th. No way there is a school with 8-10 kids from one school admitted. Not unless they all happened to be trailing siblings...but even then I'd call BS.

Not PP, but maybe they meant that 50% of those who applied were admitted, not 50% of the class. Seems highly unlikely that every kid from a single K-8 would be applying to the same school.

Stop trying to pick better schools, and start trying to raise better kids

The real bottom line is that in Metro DC for private HS the demand exceeds openings.

I would be extremely happy if one or more K8s (on either side of the river) would expand to be a K12. This is just what Potomac did, more than 50 years after its founding. There would be a startup curve to filling the upper school in such a case, but I think more than enough demand exists.

Congressional's buildable land actually is about the same as Potomac's buildable land, but all of the existing Congressional buildings would need to be replaced systematically with taller versions (which means $$$$$).

Buildable land is one challenge. A very wealthy interested donor is the biggest challenge of all.

After Sidwell consolidates its campus, maybe another school could expand by purchasing and using the old SFS land ?
