That's when we need the nanny when we are working from home because of snow

Exactly. OP here and super frustrated. No, my job will never be canceled due to the weather. And I am super annoyed at paying someone who can't get to work. having a nanny is more of a liability than a help. Venting.

I live in a very snowy area and have never had snow tires. It’s fine.

I know its frustrating. For your next nanny, you'll know to work it out before signing the contract, so you're both on the same page.

This nanny sounds like she's gonna quit without notice at the first offer that sounds even slightly cushier.

She seems to be asking for a lot considering that she is a new Nanny. 🧐

It is entirely HER responsibility to have proper/suitable transportation to + from work, that is not your responsibility.
At all.

And if you require driving on-the-job, and you are offering her the option to use your car instead of hers then you are by no means obligated to purchase her brand-new tires for her own vehicle.

Your Nanny sounds very entitled and I would simply issue her walking papers stat.

She may be nickel & diming you which is outrageous to me.

Signed,
A Nanny

Now, she wants us to buy her new tires, arguing that she can't do her job without better all-terrain or snow tires. My solution is to give her a loan for the new tires at no interest, add some money to the amount we reimburse her for using her car to cover the use of tires while on the job, and ask for payback over time for the rest. She is pushing back. Other than us gifting her new tires, she thinks she should be allowed to just stay home on snowy days but still get paid. I wouldn't say I like that. I'm not keen to just gift her new tires because she's new and I don't know how long she'll stay with us. I've offered to let her use one of our cars on the job, which is safe in all weather, but she still has to get to work, which is still a problem until she gets new tires. What's the solution?

You need a weather clause in a contract. Most families in the dc area follow government, but some make arrangements to pick up the nanny if they want her to work and her car can't make it.

Loan with automatic payroll deduction, however I agree with others she seems like a headache and entitled already.
I wouldn’t trust her in my house.

If both parents WFH then the nanny uses parent’s vehicle and NOT her own!! Mileage reimbursement not enough for all the wear and tear on her own car. Snow days she comes in 2-3 hours later IF condition is drivable. If not, send her an Uber.

I wouldn’t pay for her to have new tires.

How obnoxious of her - especially so early in her job! 😠

It is her responsibility to have a safe + working vehicle to get to and from work.

Then any driving required on the job can be done in your own private vehicle.

She sounds like a common hustler…..

Here is solution. Do not ask her to drive! A lot of nannies never drive their cars during their work day.

It's April. She wants new tires now? Probably hers are shot and she wants an excuse to get free ones. Snow is 6+ months off. Time to find new nanny and arrange with that one about snow day transport when having hiring discussions.

OP posted this in January.

If her car is for transportation to and from work, the tires are on her. If she is using her own car to drive the kids around, run errands for you - as a company car, then you buy her the tires.

Since you said you have another car she can use while on the job and she doesn't need to use her own car other than for her commute - you don't buy her the tires.

Time to let her go.

The government almost never closes for weather anymore. They just instruct people to telework or take an admin day.

They still close for people who can not telework. DH is a scientist in a lab, He does not work from home. He was going in even during the height of covid.
